Teddy attacking our cats :( Hi everyone! I've been having a problem lately with Teddy attacking our cats (he is 8 months). Skittles is 1 1/2 years old, and Minx is 4. Just this week he started running up and grabbing them by the neck and not letting go. We grab him off and immediately kennel him. I am at a loss of what to do. Any ideas? He used to get along with them, and he and Skittles were best buds, but now things have changed. Please help! :( Thanks! Tracy |

This is to try to promptly associate the behaviour of Teddy which is unacceptable. But frankly they are terror terriers:D and they will just need to mature. I am sorry I really don't have advice. I have never had a cat that could not hold their own with my Yorkies, either by climbing away or beating the stuffing out of the doggy. I am just checking to see what other suggest. I am always looking for new ideas to solve problems. ;) |
He is just being a teenager right now. Keep up the training and he will calm down soon. |
My only suggestion is to provide a place/space for the cats to retreat to until Teddy gets out of this "phase". Cats will only tolerate so much, they will beat the stuffing out of the dog and maybe it's the other way around you should be looking out for. Even really big dogs will be wary of cats, sorry not much help. Run and chase was always the most favorite game in our household and Sprocket NEVER won, but boy he sure did like to chase. :D |
I think it's a sign of him trying to show who is alpha with the cats....suggestion of something to try: You show more alpha behavior with him for awhile, and when he goes for the cats, step inbetween him and the cats, to show that they are "yours" and handled and that he doesn't need to worry about them. You may want to have him leashed for awhile to get more control over it for a few days. And also what another poster said, provide a place for the cats to escape - perhaps a tall cat tree or something. My two cents - take what you like and leave the rest. |
Yorkies and cats Yorkies were bred to chase. My cat never had a peaceful day in her life once Rocky joined the household. My poodles left her alone but he never gave up until the night before I had to put her to sleep - on that one night, he let her sleep on my bed. He was a holy terror. |
