Crate Training Issue This post isnt about a Yorkie, but about a chihuahua puppy. Anyway, my friend has an 8 week old Chihuahua and at night she sleeps in her crate. The problem is she doesnt whine or cry when she needs out to go potty. She has pooped in her crate once and not sure how many times shes peed. My friend wants to train her correctly. Since shes not letting her know when she needs out, shes not sure how to train her. |
I would suggest getting the pup on a food schedule. No food after say 7. Right before bedtime your friend should take her little one out. If she's going in the middle of the night she should set an alarm for 1-2am and let pup out again. Although not ideal consistency is key. |
It's really unusual for a puppy to pee/poop in it's crate, they usually don't like to soil their sleeping quarters. Absolutely the feeding schedule, but that in itself is very dodgy with such a tiny young baby. Obviously I don't know how big the crate is (!) but wondering if it's big enough to put it's bed at one end and the pee pad at the other? Better still if the pee pad has been slightly peed on previously, so it has some kind of a clue what to do on it!! :) Sally + Harry x |
I do not recommend limiting food for an eight week old puppy; this dog should still be with its mother. The first thing a pet owner should do is to protect and nourish the puppy, after that comes house training. I personally wouldn't even try it until the dog is older, if you try too young, your only training yourself. The crate has to be no bigger than what the dog can stand up and turn around in, and if it's too big they will poop and pee in it. Also an 8 week old puppy probably can't hold it more than an hour anyway. Her best bet would be to get an x pen like a breeder and place pee pads and a bed or crate inside the xpen. Cover the floor with lots of pee pads and gradually reduce the pads you use. There is a special method to crate training, and you need to let the dogs our on a schedule, you can't just leave them in the crate untill your ready to let them out. |
So Ive been trying to help my friend with this issue but shes getting frustrated. Shes only 21, so Im not sure if shes gonna be able to handle such a small pet. I want to tell her I'll take the puppy, but I already have two. Yikes! I was thinking about just taking her for a few weeks and get her on a schedule and keeping her healthy. Then I might get attached to the puppy though. |

HELPING A FRIEND. It is very frustrating to give good advice and then the person just ignores it. I know you really want to help her and we really want to help the puppy. I talked to a dear friend of mine that breeds Chihuahuas. She said 8 week is too young to adopt a puppy. That they don't understand the concept of potty training until week 10, 11, or 12. They need to be in a safe area like an empty deep bath tub with a warm blanket food, water and a pee pad and a few safe chew toys, or blocked on a tile floor with a gate, in an exercise pen etc.. It helps if they have access to their tiny crate to sleep in. That Wawa pups need to be put on the potty pad or taken out about every hour and every 3 or 4 hours at night ! I hope this information helps. |
