Training Treats? What training treats do you guys use? I received a bottle of these chicken flavored training treats for free with a pet purchase, but I don't think Katie Scarlett is all that crazy about them. Any suggestions on treats that might be better? Thanks!:) |
Most of the time I just use pieces of kibble. I have also use Zukes Mini Naturals, Natural Balance LID dry treats (broken into tiny pieces), frozen green beans, and plain chicken breast. Green beans are their favorite :) |
Green beans are the treat of choice for Jada and Bogie too. Just make sure you get non-seasoned beans as the canned have a lot of sodium. I buy the bags of frozen green beans. |
I use Geno's dog food...haha he has no idea or maybe he just doesn't care. I have a little training session with him at night for about 10-15 minutes (he's a fast learner) and I just know if I give him a bunch of his normal treats, then he won't eat his regular food. When I do use his treats, I give him Wellness Puppy treats. The trainer was using Cesar Dog Treats Softies Filet Mignon flavor on Saturday and he really liked those so might look into getting that as well. Honestly though, since your baby is so small, if you are gonna be training her for a little while, like half hour or so, and you expect to be rewarding her a lot, I'd see if she'll take her own puppy food as a treat. I just don't like the fact of continually giving my puppy treats over his food if I'm training him for a while. |
We used Cheerios as our training treat - Sophie Kate loved them. Not the Honey Nut variety just plain old school Cheerios. |
I use kibble with jerky treat mixed in so whole container smells like the jerky treat. Sorry caps stuck on. |

We've used: -Pieces of kibble, which is our go-to "treat" -Zuke's Mini Naturals -Cheerios -Green beans -Tiny pieces of cut up carrot or apple :) |

When I took Riley to PetSmart obedience I would just boil a chicken breast and cut it up into real tiny pieces. I have also used Zukes mini naturals [I usually cut them into 2-pieces] I just bought a bag of Fruitables..... The Pumpkin/Blueberry.... They are a clover shaped cookies, so I break pieces off for him. Amazon.com: fruitables: Pet Supplies And I just bought a bag of Smartbites trail mix. [they have several different flavors.....also] I found it at my local dog boutique for $4.99 a bag Amazon.com: zukes I also remember hearing, that dogs don't necessarly care about the size of the treat....but Quantity. For Nilla, I use Zuke's peanut butter formula. She loooves them, but I do think as she's nearing the 6 month mark we may need to mix it up a bit and try something else, as I'm noticing she plays with the treats a lot more now instead of just eating them. The size of the Zuke's is small and good for her, and she loves the taste! Other than that, she likes liver chip treats. I believe they're called Dr. Becker's Bites. |

Here is what you can do if concerned about weight management: Use fresh veges: I use what-ever is in my fridge - cut up tiny pieces for Razz, bigger for larger dogs. Carrots, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, gr or yellow beans, small pieces of yams, etc,etc. You can take 1/4c and place treats in there so you know you are not feeding more than 1/4 or even for small pup 1/8c I also for very high reward treats- use chicken or lean steak, or lamb, recently started allowing them a bit of very lean pork. |
We're working with a dog behaviorist with our three Yorkies. She said to use treats that aren't crunchy. We had cooked up venison, but it gave my oldest diarrhea. I now just use her Wellness for small breed kibble (her regular food). Boiled chicken or other lean meat in tiny pieces is the best for training, though. |
