Thank you, thank you. Wonderful suggestions. |
Oh wow thank you! Nelly just discovered she makes noise and does it for attention, now I know what to try to stop it! |
Thanks for the much needed info. My Sammy is almost 4 months old and he has started the habit of barking for attention or to have you play with him. He is learning everything I ask of him quite quickly but I was not sure about the barking training. I will start this training asap. |
My boy only barks when im out, neighbours have been complaing. really not sure what to do, he is really quiet when im home. he is now 3 and has only been doing this for the past few months. |
I see that a couple of other people are having trouble with this too. Any ideas for barking in the crate? He does it for a while right after I put him in. I've been going over and saying "Enough" which will stop him momentarily but he goes right back to it. I also hear him when we're leaving the house and coming back in. At night he has it down to about 5 minutes of throwing a fit and then goes to sleep for the night. I almost feel like going over to the crate every time is giving him the attention he is begging for but I'm not sure what else to do. Thoughts?? |
I read something on this site about saying "enough" and if it continues use a spray bottle. It seems to work. My Sammy is pretty good in the crate for now but I can see his personality starting to come out. Although I work from home most of the day I will put him in his crate with the door closed (away from his big brother the boxer) for a short time with toys food and water. |

Just seeing this! Great advice, thanks! |
I am a bad mommy.....I have allowed the barking to get completely out of hand. I have printed your instructions, Teresa, and am going to get this under control!!! I thought it was so cute they would run to me, barking, to tell me about EVERYTHING..... the UPS man, the squirrel in the back yard, my son coming up the driveway, and of course, all excited first thing in the morning, soooooo happy we are all awake and ready to eat breakfast! Lets all "talk" about it!!!! But it is getting to be tooooo much, and they are teaching each other when to bark! |
I ended up getting the bark repeller that was mentioned earlier in this thread and it really works. I only had to use it one day and now he obeys "quiet" on the first attempt. Thanks for that suggestion! |
Teresa, Thank you so much for all the excellent free training tips you offer to all of us. My dog goes nuts when he sees a dog on TV. He has learned all the commercial music and comes*running to the TV when he hears a tune associated with a commercial that a dog is in. He can be sound asleep under the covers and when he hears that tune he is scrambling like his butt is on fire to see the TV so he can bark. He has taught one of the other dogs to join him in barking at dogs on the TV. Lately I think they have managed to work a dog into every commercial on TV and then to hear 2 dogs going off barking drives me nuts. I can't wait to see if he is smart enough to learn your training method. Again, thanks you are such an asset to this forum and I appreciate all the time you devote to training us! Jackie |
My pup is about 4 months old and she is guilty of barking. Whenever I am not in the room with her she starts scratching the door/gate like crazy and barking very loudly. Also, when I am on my bed and she is on the floor she starts barking for me to pick her up. After I give in and attempt to get her on the bed she runs away from me! After I give up on chasing her in circles and I sit up on my bed she starts jumping up and barking again to come back up. I don't know what to do in this situation. I literally spent a good 15 minutes trying to chase her around to get her on the bed and to stop the barking. She also nips, growls a lot. Is this a normal puppy phase and will she grow out of it? I don't want her to become spoiled as an adult and think this is acceptable. |

Stopping the barking won't stop the excess energy. All I know to suggest is to increase its level of exercise. A tired dog is a good dog. Maybe take longer walks. Another thing that worked for me was to develop a routine for play/exercise time. Like a walk at a certain time in the morning and another at night. Play time an hour after dinner. If the dog knows exercise time is coming, it's more likely to chill at other times. As for running away from you, your dog is teaching YOU a game. It found its own way to burn off the energy. When that happens to me, I take back control of the game by deciding what we play. Instead of catch me if you can, I pull out a squeaky toy and play tug of war. At least then I can catch them. The goal is to give your dog fewer reasons to bark to get entertainment. |
I agree with the above post about exercise. These little dogs have a lot of energy. I get kind of upset when I hear people on TV say that small dogs are good for apartment dwellers because they don't need much exercise. They do need exercise and they love to run and play. A couple of good brisk walks a day and some games of fetch keep Gracie at a good activity level. She is prone to bark when she wants something but she also knows what "no" means. Teaching basic commands like "no", sit, stay, come will also make your life much easier. Your dog will know who is boss and what to do when you say something. Contrary to popular opinion dogs do not automatically understand everything you say. Once you teach them some obedience commands they start to understand what is expected of them and it makes things much easier on everyone. |

barking at night Hello, first post here... Since Lilly was a puppy i would mostly keep her in my bedroom so i could keep an eye on her and train her on her pee pads. now its timw to get her to stay in her crate in the living room. for the past few nights i've put her in her crate in the living room. i even leave a tini fan (for the noise since i have AC going in my bedroom) and the TV on really low. She will start barking in the night. Since i live in an apaprtment ( with landlord below, and close neighbors) im quick to run and tell her no and to stop. Last night this was at 130am, 330am and 630 am! oh im tired! i need her to know there is no barking inside her crate at any times. sorry if i missed in the thread something similar. |
My Lilly is barking at night in her crate at random times. i am trying to pout her in the living room after being in the bedroom for a while. I live in an apartment so i cant let the barking go. |
Thank you! Puddles is 5 1/2 months old and she is soooo guilty of bossing everyone around with her barking. I also am going to print this and make copies and to put everywhere I can think of for my husband and grown son! Puddles has both my guys trained - when I come home she is in someone's lap. Both say she will not stop barking. She has an exercise pen that she is suppose to stay in if I am not there (My guys don't pay enough attention to what she may be getting into or chewing on to leave her loose all the time). Now that she has the guys trained, she is working on me too. I put her in the pen to go take a shower and I hear her barking the entire time. Maybe this will get EVERYONE on the same page:rolleyes: |
Will not quit barking help me. I am new here. I have a Yorkie, one and one half year old. He is a good dog when no one is around but me. when someone comes to the door, he barks like crazy. when my husband comes home in the evening, he stands and barks and him when he sits down to rest. I need help. this is driving my husband crazy and at times me also. We have bought a no barking collar and it is not helping. I need help. My husband is almost to the place whee he wants to get rid of our dog. I need help |

WOW! I am a new Mom, Bella is 5 months now and this mini training session is so helpful for me. THANK YOU so much for taking the time.....Bella's bark training is also starting today. She barks back at us and yes it is cute, we laugh.....all is about to change! |
This is great, cant wait to try it out. |
Good tips, but an "enough" won't stop my reactive dog from barking to something very arousing like a stranger/dog coming into my property :/ I don't even think water works on my dog |
Thanks for the advice Mrs Ford, but how do we stop our rusty from barking when we are about to leave the building and he remains behind? By the way we are in the UK. |
Thank you for your wonderful advice. I need to be doing this training with Hollee. She is turning into a yapper! And will race outside at the sound of a dog barking. I have been trying to stop her, but not working..she has often already sprung up and out before I can say much! If I tell her off about something I say No! And the word for whatever it is she was doing.. And make a cross over with my hands over her. This is working to a certain extent. She no longer begs for food when we are eating. She curls up on the carpet sleeping until we are finished. But if I tell her off she barks at me..so I say No Barking and cross over my hands and she gives it straight back 😒..its like she is cheeking me? Any suggestion on this one? Tks Ave x |

My husband and I work from 10 pm- 7 am and Titus always cries/howls/whines in his crate when we leave for work. Our condo is attached to our neighbors on both sides and they can hear Titus. During the day when I'm home, I play with him and have him cuddle with me. I also have his ex-pen (its octagon shaped) open so he can go in and play with his toys, if I close it he will bark. He is not yet potty-trained so I have to watch him like a hawk. If I leave the room for even a second he starts crying too. I'm not sure what to do when I leave for work...its not like I can tell him to stop barking when I'm not there to tell him so.. * Also I took the advice to ignore him when he is barking and only go to him when he is quiet. |
this is awesome .... where's the "Like" buttons lol |
Mia is three and she gets so excited when it is time to eat that she starts barking until I feed her. Loud exciting barks. Drive me insane. I have tried water bottle and now when she barks I feed my pug and then don't feed her until she stops and sits. In will try this method. Wish me luck :) |
Barking whining Hi, We have a 12 week old who hasn't figured out the barking thing but she is a terrible mama's girl and when she can be touching me she whines. I never pick her up or give her attention until she is quiet but would you deal with the whining the same as the barking? I loved the bark help-seems like a great way to start. Jan |
