Wrong treats for training? Hi everyone, my little Digby is doing great. We take him to puppy class weekly but it seems every night or the day afterwards he gets sick with diarrhea or vomiting. The class trainer recommended we bring extra yummy treats that would be used just for training class to help him learn. We have tried things like lightly seasoned grilled chicken, low fat low sodium turkey hot dogs, even low fat cheese but he always is a little under the weather the next day after class, diarrhea etc. Any ideas for yummy treats for my little beloved that won't cause him tummy problems and won't cause me to have to run the deep steam cycle on my washing machine with everything that was in his crate that day.;) Any help and ideas would be great. thanks all! health to everyone and your little ones! If he will work for his own kibble use it. Try a toy or pats. What about cheerios? JL |

How long before you take him to class is he eating? My pup is also going attending classes and they recommended that we not feed him prior as he will be hungry and not "over eat". I love the name Digby - that is so cute! |
The problem with training class is that they probably get too many treats in a short period of time. I brought Gerbers sweet potatoe puffs for Abby. They seemed to be a little lighter than the standard treat options. |
I have to agree on just using his kibbles. I am sure it's a mix of all the excitement and then new food all at the same time. It may well be worth a call to the vet to ask there opion. These little guys are very different then the larger breeds that go to puppy classes. Good luck and keep us posted. |
Tibbe loves jerky treat but I fear diarrhea from many of those during training. I put a big piece of loud-smelling jerky in a tight container with his kibble and let the scent permeate the kibble. Tibbe gobbles down that jerky-smelling kibble like it is a real delicacy and then occasionally, he actually gets the jerky! It's a real treat for him and he never gets diarrhea from training - which he demands we do daily and several times a day. Tibbe LOVES his training. |
Hi, I know several puppies who had the same problem. First use tiny rice sized treats no bigger. Second use the most neutral thing you can like, softened kibble, boiled chicken skinned and patted dry, * moist sweet potato strips cut in to rice size pieces, crisp cooked carrot, crisp cooked green bean. * I peel and bake sweet potato in microwave about 2 min. , let cool completely, then slice long way, into french fry like strips, then cut across into tiny cubes. I freeze baggies of this and only take out what I need for a training session. I put a paper towel in the the bottom of a plastic bowl to absorb excess melt moisture. Hope this helps. |
