Puppy Training Book Suggestions So I was looking for puppy training books but I would prefer for them to be either specific to the yorkie breed or toy breeds. Anyone have any suggestions for one that they really liked and definitely helped? Thanks :) :animal-pa |
Well, they aren't specific to yorkies or toys, but I've found the Monks of New Skete books to be the best out there. |
For general training & knowledge of Yorkies I loved both 'Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies' & 'Idiots Guide to Yorkshire Terriers'. They both gave a ton of info & ideas, yet didn't read like a text book. |
Anything by Cesar Millan. His books may not be Yorkie specific, but his approach of training people to better understand their dogs is, in my opinion, 100% necessary for all dog owners to learn. |
When you buy a book about Yorkies usualy there is a training section. But, there is not a Yorkie Training Book that I know of. I think you need to taylor any training program to your unique dog and family. One of my favorites is 1000 Best dog training secrets by Robyn Achey and Bill Gorton I also like Dog Perfect by Sarah Hodgson. And this one is published by Animal Planet is Yorkshire Terriers by Wendy Bedwell-Wilson. Ceasar Millan has several good books. Some of his methods really should not be used with Yorkies because they are geared for larger aggressive dogs. |
Let the Dog Decide is a really awesome book. I think megansmomma recommended it to me and i like it so far! |
Anything and everything by Pat Miller and leave the Monks and Ceasr books in the store. You want to build a relationship built on trust and love not fear. JL |
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!!! The only reason I asked for a training book specifically for yorkies is cause some of the books out there want you to do things that I am a little nervous to do with my baby. Like teaching to lay down - it'll say put your hands lightly on his shoulder and then push him downward to a laying down position all while his nose is following a treat...I don't know about that cause I am a little nervous to lightly push on my baby's shoulders. He's so little, I don't want to hurt him. I guess a training boook for little dogs, toy breeds, ect would work as well. I just think there are different ways to train certain dogs based on their size. One technique for a doberman might not work for a little yorkie. |
I aggree SIZE DOES MATTER When Training your little dog. I am updating my little booklet for people who adopt my puppies. Of course everything is geared for Yorkies. My sister gives it to people who adopt her toy poodles too. She simply added a chapter about how to groom poodles LOL. |
Cesar uses fear??? On what planet? Cesar Millan teaches people about dog behaviour and how to work with it rather than against it. That's it, that's all. Using fear? No, that's an outright lie. |
