Random yorkie aggression!?! So lately my eldest yorkie, Chibi (4yrs) has been increasingly getting agry at people and other dogs while out on walks. He has always barked at people carrying things and kids but now he barks at everyone. He's not barking meanly though. He also barks a lot at big dogs, especailly if they are unruley but today while walking him and Molli they both started barking at this basset hound(molli barking playfully) and thier leashes got tangled up and I dropped Chibi's leash and he went charging at the basset hound who was cowering and shaking in fear! Luckily he didnt hurt him but he was being very aggressive and barking and biting at the poor basset. I have never seen him act like this before, especially to a dog who was just minding his own buisness. I am worried his aggresion towards people and dogs while out on walks is increasing and I'm not sure what to do to make it stop. Help? |
I'm no expert, but the fact that it seems to be happening out of the blue for no reason would make me want to rule out a health issue first. I wonder if there's an underlying reason for him being suddenly cranky? What I do to curb that kind of behavior is distract them with a toy or a treat. When I see a dog up ahead, I pull them into a heel and reward with a treat. With mine, they were thinking it was their job to scare off the other dogs. I was showing them that I have it under control and there are good things that can come of it if they do it my way. They're not perfect, but I walk three dogs at a time and it's manageable. |
Aggression really should be dealt with in person. You can curb the behavior without understanding why it is happening. It is much better to understand what is triggering the aggression and change that. Often dogs will take the role of rule maker and protector if they think their person is not doing the job.The Pack Leader is supposed to protect and provide for the family (pack). Please read Nothing in Life is Free. Your Yorkie needs to learn aggression is not allowed.Do Not Use A Flexi Leash and carry a spray bottle of Water. 1. On walks if he starts lunging ahead and barking CUE HIM by saying 'NO' Firmly ( you may choose Quiet, Enough or what ever feels natural to say, always use the same word once you decide which one to use) After The word cue, turn around and go the other way. If he tries to go behind you to keep barking, say another firm NO and spay him with the water (set it on stream not mist)the idea is to break his aggressive trance. You may have to retrain your dog about what his job is. A good book, Dog Perfect by Sarah Hodgson. I hope this helps. |
