Trash can fiend! So...Chewie loves to get into trash cans. And he's smart enough to wait until I'm out of the room to go on his little sprees. Stinker! I'd really love to be able to have trash cans that are located conveniently for me...but that makes them convenient for him too. How have you dealt with pups that love raiding trash cans? |
I would put it out of his reach. There are way too many things that are dangerous that go into the trash can. |

The kitchen trash is tall and has a lid that locks shut. Started this when the big dog was a puppy. There are small trashcans with lids that flip up when you step on the peddle and then shut when you take your foot off (Target I think). We have these in bedrooms. |
When Callie was a puppy she was crazy about getting any paper or tissues out of the trash so we bought new trash cans ones that you have to step on the peddle for it to open they make them in so many sizes now and colors (I got a pink one for my room) |
Looks like my trash cans will stay out of reach! :p However, I would still like to train him out of his trash-can-raiding habit, just so it isn't his first response when we're somewhere that isn't dog-proofed. So if you have any ideas for how to approach this training, I'd love to hear them! |

I know that my way is pretty archaic (and lazy) but when I first got Teddy I sprayed bitter apple spray on everything he would get close to and I didn't want him sniffing/chewing on. It worked for us pretty well...now he doesn't chew blinds, shoes, etc. There are a lot more efficient ways to train I'm sure, but the spray worked extremely well for us and I didn't have to go any further than that. |
Yes that absolutely drives me nuts. My yorkies will get into the small bathroom trashcans and the cats will get into the kitchen one. Im going to get a trash can with a lid on it for the kitchen because no matter what i do the cats get in it and my blood pressure goes up when they do |
My kitchen can is under the cabinet and we also put a baby lock on the cabinet too. |

A little off topic but, in addition to tissues, these little buggers are like human vacuum cleaners! I vacuum/sweep/mop all the time now - not that I was a slob before - but I want to make sure Gracie doesn't pick up something on the floor that she shouldn't. My house has never been so clean. Messy, with doggie stuff all over, but really clean! |
mine just like the toilet paper on top of the bathroom trash. we just have to keep them both empty all the time and make sure they can't reach them when they fill up. the kitchen trash has never been a problem it's big and has a lid and they don't knock it over so we're good to go. |
Our bathroom trash cans have lids with the step on peddle so Trixie can't get into them. We used to have a kitchen with a similar lid, but now the garbage has it's own cabinet. These guys are little stinkers when it comes to tissues and paper towels! |
I have a dumpster diver as well. He only cares about the kitchen trash can and doesn't bother with the others. I simply don't trust him in the kitchen anymore. He wears a bell so he can't sneak off without me noticing, and the kitchen is gated off if I can't watch him. |
