Pooping in crate overnight Our puppy Joey has been very good about holding his bladder overnight, but now, all of a sudden, he is pooping in his crate every night. Does anyone have any suggestions? He's 14 weeks old, so I know he is still learning, but I would like to get him properly potty trained as soon as possible. We have the divider up as well. |
Does he cry to be let out in the middle of the night to go potty? |
i would start scheduling a potty break midway through the night until he holds it better. if he still has the problem it might be time to try another method besides crating him. when we got Bentley he had seperation anxiety at night and even in our bedroom he would soil his crate. rather than clean up poop every night we decided to try him in our bed and it worked. he slept the entire night with no accidents and didn't need to go out once. he's been in our bed ever since and he likes it that way. |
Kaos actually started doing this when he was about 14-15 wks out of no where. I figured out that he couldn't eat past 5 p.m. If I took away the food at 5 p.m. no more accidents. He eats all his food before 5 p.m. now anyway...he caught on. :p |
Oh and make sure he has the appropriate amount of space in the crate. He should only have enough room to stand up and turn around in it. If you give him more than that it gives him enough room to soil his crate and not lay in it. :) |
Can he sleep with you...? I have a little foster who is snuggling with my girls on the big bed and he can hold both #1 & #2 all night. This is just my opinion but, when you are not home then that is when you should confine your dog (I prefer x-pen or a gated puppy safe room) and when you ARE home...pup should be with you.;) |
My suggestion is to change his feeding schedule. Like another member said, maybe take away his food after a certain point and see if that helps. I find that Ozzy is like clockwork for his bowel movements, but his feeding is set to a fairly certain schedule. I think that for poops they have a much harder time holding it. That's more a problem of you figuring out his "body clock" schedule and then changing feeding/exercise times to re-work that schedule. One thing that helped us at the beginning was taking Ozzy to the park around 7:30 or 8:00 at night and getting him to run and play. It literally worked the poop right out of him. You could try lots of exercise before bed to see if that will stimulate him enough to go before he goes into his crate. |
My girl is 15 weeks and most nights she poops during the night. Her last meal is at 6pm ish and I know her poop schedule to a T. She usually poops 4 times a day which to me is a lot but the vet said shes a baby. eat sleep poop. I would get up and take him out even if he can hold his pee. |
Thanks for all of your input guys! I have taken away his food at a certain time, and he hasn't been doing it anymore. :) I wish he could sleep with us, but I just don't trust him yet to do that. I've also been taking him for the late night walk right before bed to get him to potty one more time! |
yay for success! congrats! |

This is exactly what I did for Taycie when she was a puppy. It worked like a charm:) Eventually he will get to sleep with you:) In a month from bringing Taycie home she was sleeping with me! Good Luck! |
