Petsmart puppy class Has anyone here taken their Yorkie puppy to the Petsmart puppy class? How was it? What age was your puppy? I've considered taking Paisley to them. I'd have to drive 70 miles to get there so I'd want to make sure it was worth my time and drive. It's 6 classes, One per week for 6 weeks. |
I took Macy to the PetSmart in Decatur. We started when she was 14 weeks old. I think it depends on how good the instructor is at each location. The one in Decatur at the time was a woman that had been a dog trainer for 14 years and she was pretty good. I visited the class first and then asked the trainer to let me know when other small dogs were enrolled in the class and tried to sign up for that one. You will learn the basics...sit, down, stay, walking on a leash. She was in a class with another Yorkie, a Yorkie Poo and a couple of pugs and she had a blast. I had been in one other training classe where Macy was in with Labs, German Sheppards (sp), Rotties and it was miserable. They all thought she was a rabbit and wanted to make her their lunch. I heard comments like.....my dog's toy is bigger than that dog, my dog eats as much as your dog weighs, etc. One of the German Shepphards got loose from it's handler and charged us one night in class. I didn't think I could move that fast. Just try to get in a group with other small dogs if possible. |
I took jack when he was around 6-8 months, I learned some things and he did also. I then took him and Josie for a one on one class, that was even better than the full class. It was private lessons. Jack was probably a year and Josie around 9 months. |

Are you glad you waited til your puppies were a little older to take the classes? I was thinking waiting til Paisley was 16 weeks or so. |

We didn't have an issue with larger dogs, there were big and small dogs in both of their classes. One aggressive dog did have to be removed but both dogs got along with all the dogs there. Is there a trainer that can come to your house? Bark Busters helped us with Bandit after we got Nala and they came to us. |
I took Sadie to puppy class at Petsmart, Springfield, Ohio when she was about 9 months old. She did really well, and the trainer was excellent. She learned basic commands, and I use those commands all the time. I would like to take an immediate class sometime. Her favorite friend was a German Shepherd. Sadie would go under Rufus and look up at his tummy. They were buds. |
My Yorkie, Tessie, took puppy classes at Petsmart and it was a great experience. I think she was about 18 weeks old. It was a wonderful experience, most of the dogs in her class were 10 lbs or less. She even got a bullystick, a graduation hat and a diploma. |
That's great! Thanks everyone! I may try and take Paisleyto the class this winter. |
Pita just finished her class at Petco. She was about 6 mos when she started. Omg, she learned so much. Sit, down, stay, leave it...she is a pro at roll over!! |
That's awesome that Pita learned so much! I didn't realize Petco had the puppy classes. I'd have to still drive to Evansville, IN. .... there's no Petco around here either. I wish someone in our area did the obedience classes. When I was young I took my Collie to obedience class through 4-H. The lady that did those classes has passed away since then and I've not found anyone in this area who teaches them now. |
I didn't realize they had the classes either...we lucked out with it being right down the street. Good luck, let us know how it goes! |
I took Riley when he was about 16-weeks.... He did GREAT!! There were only two other puppies in his class. They were Cavalier Charles Spaniels and they were brother/sister. It was just okay.... but I was happy just to get him out and exposed to different things at that age. |
When Macy and I took classes at PetSmart they dedicated a portion of the class to socialization. That is where Macy had the most fun. All the dogs looked so unhappy when the socialization was over. Macy got some growls and nips at her and she gave some growls and nips too. It also helped me relax a little to see her with other dogs and holding her own. She weighed 4 lbs. when she started her first class. |
Good for Riley!!! That's too cute about Macy!!:aimeeyork Paisley has had quite a bit of socializing with other dogs and also cats. She does "play growl" and chase them.... I have a Bassett Hound and a Norwegian Elkhound , both outside/farm dogs. (They have a heated and air conditioned building they can go in with a doggy -door). Paisley loves chasing them! I also have a Dachshund and Chihuahua in the house. My daughter's Lab comes and visits too. We also have a couple barn cats , who are tame and Paisley likes them too. Here at work the neighbor lady has a dachshund and Paisley likes him too. So I don't think there will be any problems with the socializing part for her but she might just want to play the whole time and not listen and do what she's supposed to do! :D |
