Chews off collar?? Sorry, but this isnt about my yorkie baby. It about my 1yr old chi. :animal36 I am getting extremely frustrated! Hubby and I were separated for most of his life. off and on. Well he was never potty trained. Is it too late for him? Im training my new yorkie and he must be potty trained as well. I will not accept him going poo or pee in the house!!! next question! He also chews through his collars! I have spent so much money on collars for them to only last a day. We don't have a fenced yard where we live, so a collar and tags are a must to keep him safe! I have tried the spray.....he likes it :( are there any other options for collars? would a harness work? Im about to lose my mind with all of this. I love him, but he tries to run this house! and no one runs my house but me!!! lol!!! |
Harnesses are safer for a small dog. I would definitely switch to that for no other reason that it is a safer option. I know my dog used to be able to chew his harness too, however, after getting a Buddy Belt, that stopped. He is not physically able to get it in his mouth from the way it fits on the body. |
thanks! I went to Petsmart last night and talked to the trainer. A harness is what he suggested too :p And what do ya know, he likes when I put it on! Definitely a good thing!!! |
Never tie a dog outside in a harness, many harnesses are easy to come off ! dogs are different in shape, my yorkie has so thick body but little feet and head so it comes of easily. Is the collar tigh enough ? its enough to fit 2 fingers under the collar, if he can put his jaw under it and gnaw on it then its probably too loose ! Always be with him when he's tied outside , dogs can get stuck in the leash and hurt themselfs badly, I know a dog that choked because he got stuck in the leash, the leash got around his neck somehow and he died sadly :( So never leave them alone tied ! its so dangerous. If you see him chewing on his collar then ban him that ! just say a plain ''NO'' and stop him if he's starting to chew it, I would use a leather collar that is thick, hard to chew on it , and when he doesn't chew on it then say ''good boy !'' for example, with a voice like your talking to a baby, right away when he's stopped chewing then do it too and have some treat for him. Take the collar also off when he's not around you. Is he microchipped? |
He is microchipped. I have never used a tie out on him because we live on a main road. Since he is very sneaky, I am afraid he will take off. This dog has never ever been trained. and since I am training my yorkie, I want to get him trained as well. He has a lot of bad habits that need to be corrected :( |
I feel your pain when it comes to the chewing the collar thing. We went through 6 or 7 with our Quincy til he was about 18 months old. Just when we thought he was over it and spent big money on a good leather one for him,,,, Nope,,, chewed that one too. They need to be tight, the two finger thing is a food rule to follow. As for training look at my site, I have proven methods that you can read that may help. Dawn's Yorkies / Yorkie Puppies / For Sale, Ohio |
We had collars on our small dogs. They chewed through their collars and their sisters' collars. We tried a harness and they chewed through that too. Unfortunately, they will chew through each others collars and/or harness so there isn't much we can do. We have a fenced yard and just don't put collars on the dogs anymore. In your situation, if they continue to chew through the collars, and you need to have a collar on them, then you might have to resort to some sort of metal collar or chain that they cannot chew. Not ideal I know, but you may not have a choice. Good luck. |
Are the collars a proper fit? Other than that, I have no ideas. I did want to encourage you to potty train your chi. It's never too late! Start from square one with the chi as well and give him the same treatment you give your yorkie puppy. Your chi might resist at first since he's never been expected to potty a certain way or in a certain place, but he can learn. Good luck. |
