OK-I Concede! Please help! Since giving up is not an option, can someone please tell me how I can get ear drops/cleaner in Neo's ears? It is amazing how strong a little 10 pound Yorkie can be when he doesn't want to comply. He has yeast in his ears and has to have meds put in twice a day for 2 weeks, but even with DH "helping", it is like catching lightning in a bottle! ANY suggestions? |
What have you tried? Is he snapping or just trying to get away? |
Can you try it when he's asleep? I found it's better if you sneak up on them when they are not expecting it. As soon as mine see the bottle - forget it :p |

I've even thought of using a tube sock to put over his head, with ear holes cut out, but hate to do it except as a last resort. |
Sharon Hill TRUE PUPPY LOVE PLEASE HELP I joined here because I saw some posts about Sharon Hill at True Puppy Love where we got our wonderful Maltichon. Unfortunately he died this week and we want to get another puppy from her, Her website is down and the number we had is disconnected but we are hoping someone may know how to get intouch with her in Oklahoma. Our family and children are devastated and we need help mending this hole in our hearts. Thanks Candi Birmingham AL |
Wow, I hope some of the members have a suggestion. I hesitate to offer any ideas. My dogs all allow me to groom, bathe, cut nails, ear cleaning , teeth brushing and so on. Gracie was a rescue and she bit me when i tried to brush her at first. I wrapped her in a towel like they do new babies and brushed the towel. When she stopped fighting, I praised and gave her a tiny treat. It took about a week to get her calm enough to actually brush fur. But you can't do that about medication, that they need now. Good Luck |
Thor lets me brush his teeth, cut his nails, etc etc. He HATES ear drops. I definitely sympathize. I've never gotten schooled by a four pound dog before. This may take longer than you have, but I suggest desensitization and counter conditioning. In English, that means that you give him a treat, and touch his ear. Praise him, do it again. Fold his ear back, treat, praise. Show him the bottle, treat, praise. Hold the bottle near his ear, treat, praise.Try putting ONE drop in, BIG TREAT! Etc. Since I assume you have to get this going over the next day, I would try one step every fifteen minutes. You want to push his comfort zone without getting him into a frenzy, and giving him some time to recover. Ideally, you'd do each step one night over the course of several weeks, but I bet you use little bits of steak, you can do it in a day. |
I'm not as nice as QS. :) If mine put up that kind of fight, they would be muzzled and restrained or scruffed and restrained. Your restrainer should be able to hold this way. The other option is wrapping your pup like a burrito. If you can't do it, the vet will have to. That could possibly mean a few techs holding him down while muzzled. Whatever you decide, just try to get your pup over this because it will only get worse if not deal with and vet staff aren't going to be all warm and fuzzy if that is going on at the office... |
If the dog knows you are anxious and that you will give up, the dog will fight. Be confident, catch him, and then no matter how long it takes, don't let him go until you put the drops in the ears. He will probably learn fairly quickly that he isn't going to be released until it is done, so he may as well not fight it. If putting him on a countertop is too risky, choose a small area that he won't be able to escape from. For instance, a small bathroom. Grasp his ear flap firmly and don't let go. You won't hurt him. If he snaps, tell him "uh, uh, uh" or "no bite." Be pleasant, but firm. Never act excited or frustrated. You can always try to incorporate a little massage in the whole process. Rub his chest, scratch behind his ears, whatever he likes. My boys like being told how wonderful they are. :) All of this has a calming effect. Once the drops are in, tell him he is a good boy and give him a treat. Follow up with his favorite activity. Good luck. |
Can you wrap him like a papoose in a large bath towel, leaving only his head out? |
Thanks so much guys! I'm going to take y'all's suggestions and give it a try. This crap has gone on long enough, and I'm tired of him winning. Truth is, in a way, I don't blame him for putting up such a fuss. The meds that the derm gave us to use stung him really badly, and caused him to rub his little head on the carpet. I called the derm back and told him how much it hurt Neo, and he called in another script to our vet. This other stuff is very mild, as we've used it before, but Neo AIN'T HAVIN' IT, lol! |

Tibbe was so so so wild when I first got him I had to employ the towel method his first week - he needed lots of treatment for things and had little social interaction and at 9 mos., he was strong and could really fight me. Now, he lets me do anything to him with only a drawback but no fighting, running, growling. He will even come to me when it is toothbrushing and toenail time. He's come to far but at first, we had some tough times. When you are done - however you do it - really love and praise him a lot and tell him how very proud you are of him and spend some time with him touching/kissing a lot so he will associate the unpleasant experience with a following very, very good time and getting lots of love and affection. |
Hey guys! I finally got a little muzzle yesterday for the "wild beast" and it has helped quite a bit. I still have to have help to keep him still, but at least I'm not mauled as badly, lol. I think one of my biggest problems is not just with Neo, but with DH! He is such a tenderheart and worries that restraining and being firm with Neo will forever change his trust in us. (Actually, I think he is worried that Neo will be mad at Daddy and look at him like he's the "bad guy".) I'm trying to get across to him that we have to be firm and not give up, or our boy will keep on being a brat every time we need to do something that he does not like. Any suggestions for me on how to handle the husband? I'm SERIOUS! |
