Is there hope? Well, hello to you all. This is my first post. I have searched this topic, and although there are multitudes of training questions...I still came up with no help. I just got my first yorkie on friday, and I love him! He weighs 2 pounds, and is 9 weeks old. He is doing fairly well with the pee pads indoors (when I take him to them constantly), but he is not only confused at the idea of going outside to go to the bathroom, but he is terrified of the outdoors! It is getting cold and windy, and although I put a sweater on him, he just sits there, attempts to become as small as possible, and then shakes and whines...so we go in. (I even took a couple of his messes outside for him to smell later, but it didn’t work.) As soon as we go in, I often then take him to the pee pad by the door, and he goes! AHHHH! (but I still praise him...at least it’s not the floor) To make matters worse, I live in an apartment building, on the second floor. I feel like there is no hope to house train him. Should I just wait for spring, or would this let a whole new set of problems arise with trying to train an older dog? Thanks for the help, and I hope this all makes sense. :) |
It sounds like hes sensitive to the outdoor temps. You may have to have him peepad trained and outdoors trained. My dogs wont go out in the rain thye go any other time so I have to have them trained both ways. You might have more luck with the outdoor training in the Spring. God luck I think its harder to peepad train then to train them to go outside. |
Pee pads it is! Your baby is telling you all too clearly that it is too nasty outside for him! Do pee pads until it warms up, and then try again for the outdoors. |
hi and welcome to yorkie talk, im gina.. i would ditto jaspersmom on this one.. lexi is trained indoors only... its a good thing when the winter comes... |
I tried to keep my little guy (Straszny) as warm as possible, and shielded from the wind, but honestly, I didn't think that it was worth it for HIM. I was kind of hoping that you all would suggest waiting until spring. Im glad that you did...:) I didn't know if this would just confuse him at that point, but I am sure that we will be able to work through it. No more outside for him... By the way, in case you are wondering, Straszny is Polish for terrible or scary..lol, he is neither of these, but I went to Poland on a mission trip last summer, and met a yorkie with this name....and thats how it all started. |
im sure he will get confused, but he is still young.. just keep at it and praise him when he does go inside on the pad ....give him a treat everytime.... i would love lexi to go potty outside, but no can do....she wont dare to... |
What kinds of treats do you suggest for such a young puppy? Im scared to give him greenies yet. I have Eukanuba treats, the same brand as his food, but I have to break them up so small...he doesnt care for them too much. |
