Will only "come" and "sit" for treats Our puppy is 6.5 months old and has known "come" and "sit" for months now. The only problem is that she will only "come" or "sit" when we have a treat for her. She looks at our hand and makes sure there is something for her, before she does the command. How do we get her to do these things without a treat? or, is that even possible? |
lol. You have a princess on your hands. My dogs are like that too.:rolleyes: You can start by making her work for what she gets so she knows she does not get food/water/play without you. So she looks at you as the "leader". Good or bad, when I give a command (and when I have enough energy to get up), I force them to do what I said. If they don't sit, I put them in a sit myself, etc. Just like if I tell them to be quiet and they don't listen, I drag them away from what they are barking at. |
Try making it less obvious when you have food. Maybe have the treats in a bag nearby. Once a dog has a command down cold, you can start giving treats on a less regular basis. Maybe 1 out of every 4 times, you don't give her a treat, and after a while, 2. At some point, you should be able to only give her treats for those tricks in a blue moon. Research shows that a random recinforcement schedule is actually more effective than a treat every time. That being said, I have a total mercenary on my hands, and he definitely moves a lot slower if he can't see a treat in the immediate vicinity. You can also try rewarding her with other things. I don't give Thor his food until he Sits and Stays. I make him Sit/Stay when I open the door to the exciting, outdoor world. You can have her do a trick before you give her her favorite toy, maybe, or every time you throw a ball for her. |
