screaming on leash and color Miso hates his leash and his collar. As soon as its on him, he screams like he has a broken leg, or is severely injured. I have given him lots of love, treats, put kimchi on the leash and collar and walked with him (Kimchi loves it) lots of praise and nothing helps. He plants his butt firmly down and SCREAMS. Honestly I feel like our neighbors are going to think I am abusing our puppy! Today I put a series of small pieces of cheese in front of him, and he walked towards me on his leash and collar eating the treats but whimpering, and belting out screams every now and again. Any Ideas? He gets is 3rd and final shots in 3 weeks, and then we want to be able to take him for walks without carrying him. and for some background, he is a major baby. He always wants to be held, coddled, cries often. I cant figure it out, since Kimchi was the opposite! |
Instead of a collar, try a harness, maybe??? and a fexi lead??? I have also left a leash on a dog in thehouse, only under a very watchful eye. They would learn that it wasn't going to eat them and be o.k. I am sure someone has some better techniques. I know how hard it is to get on to walk on a leash sometimes. |

What is a fexi lead? I have looked at harnesses and nothing fits, he only weighs 1.75 lbs and we dont have much of a selection here in Korea, but the good news is he wore just the collar all day today, and after a bit he got use to it. Now just tackling the leash! |
Look for a ferret harness at a pet store or online. Several members here with tiny pups used them. Yorkies are prone to collapsed trachea, a debilitating and deadly condition. Using a leash attached to a collar puts too much pressure on their delicate necks. For leash training, try having a helper stand 10 feet in front of you and Miso and encourage Miso to walk to them. Maintain a calm and confident demeanor yourself and say, "Let's go" happily as you move forward. Max took a few days to get off of our driveway, but then he was off and walking. Practice every day and Miso will probably do the same. Also, be careful with the cheese. Yorkies are also prone to pancreatitis and fatty foods like cheese can be one of the triggers. |

All very good advice. PLEASE use a harness on your pup. Collars are very bad for their necks if they are attached to a leash. Also, please get your pup checked by a vet to make sure that no damage has already been done to the pup's neck (the screaming concerns me). A ferret harness is a good suggestion. As for walking attached to a leash, I don't have any tips. My pups LOVE going for walks, so we never have a problem getting them to move :p |
I used a rabbit harness when Mayzie was a pup. It fit well. |

Also, don't leave the collar on when you are not home. Very dangerous! www.paristheblindwonderdog.blogspot.com |
I just put a collar on Ruger and let him fight with it 'till he got used to it." I have heard horror stories about collars on Yorkies so I would heed what others have said. They make "breakaway" collars for dogs so they don't get hung up, and I would also recommend a harness for walking your dog, especially if the dog pulls. I put a harness on Ruger and left it on all day. He ate right through it. It sounds as though the best thing to do right now is forget the collar and use a harness when you finally do take him out. I like the ones that the dog steps into and buckles on top of the dog's shoulders. Easier than the ones that slip over the dog's head. |
Buy a small thin collar for him to wear, don't let him wear the collar when you are not around but let him wear it at home. Use a soft collar, nylon, I reccomend Rogz collars in the smallest size they would be perfect for him. |
