A none verbal pup We got a Yokrie puppy this past friday so this is only the forth day we have had her. she is 3 months old though and we were told she is potty trained and she does very well as long as I take her out periodiclly. the only issue we are having is that she does not tell us when she needs to go, she has not barked once since she is her. Since we have had her she has only had 2 maybe 3 accidents in the house and they were only when I was busy with something else etc but she does not let us know in anyway that she has to go. I was suggested by a friend to put a bell by the door and giggle it every time we go out and that is a great idea exept for the fact that my children would be gingling it all the time. Any ideas on how we can get her to let us know she has to go??? Thanks |

By the way - IMO you really don't want to encourage barking. Some Yorkies can and do yap and bark more than some other breeds. If you have a quieter one enjoy it!!! Teresa |

Three months is very young to expect a Yorkie to be 100% potty trained and able to alert you when she needs to go outside. It's not impossible, but not typical. That is why frequent and scheduled potty breaks are recommended. Many Yorkies do not bark for up to a year, or bark very little. My younger boy Teddy comes to me when he has to go. I'm not sure how to explain, but I know what he needs when he comes. To train for this, I would start by asking your pup frequently if she needs to "go potty" or "go outside." Use key words and phrases consistently and she will learn to associate them with the activity. Go outside with her and when she does her business, praise profusely and give a small treat (I use a single kibble). Take her for potty breaks when she wakes from sleeping/naps, after meals, after play sessions or any activity, and frequently in between. If bells are out, you will have to keep a watchful eye. Your pup will likely learn to go to the door or come to you when she has to go. |

Ozzy is 4 1/2 months and he only barks when we tell him to speak. When he wants out he'll go near the door and sit there, or maybe whine once in a while. We watch him like a hawk though, and I really, REALLY pay attention to his non-verbal signal - sniffing the floor! |
Thank you for all the replies. She is really a great pup for her age and she is crate trained and does not bark/cry/wimper or go potty when in the crate so when we go off she is in there with food/water her bed and a toy or two. and she does not potty over night we take her out at 6am and she goes to bed around 10ish and she does great through the night. I will be watching her as close as I can and I do take her out frequntly and then she goes outside I am very pleased she is doing so well, I did not realize many dont bark much my mom has a yorkie and she barks a lot about everything. I may try a bell and tell the kids not to touch it but you know how that is with kids telling them dont touch this means everytime my back is turned or I am on the phone play with this. LOL!!! |
She is really great for only being 3 months. she has a crate and is creat trained she goes right in on her own and does not cry or wimper when in there and she does not potty in th crate either. I have not called the breeder with any questions I feel she is doing great for her age just was not sure on how to get her to tell us when she needs to go. This is actually her second home her first owner was elderly and fell and broke her hip and had to go to a home and the breeder bought her back with all her supplies and accessories and then we got her from the breeder so there has been a lot of changes in her short life and yet she is doing so well we are vey happy! |
That is great that she enjoys her crate. She is doing very, very well with potty habits considering how young she is. |

Has anyone ever trained there Yorking to bring them their leash?!?! We hang hers near the door and yesterday when I grabbed it I thought that might be a good way for her to tell us and I have none other types of dogs that do this but never one so small. |
