Potty Training---
 

So, Ive done what most say here. I have taken him out every two hours and stood from 5 mins-45 mins with him.

Last night he piddled in the floor at around 930. So, I did the Crate thing with him. Put him in his crate and got up every 2 hours. --NO PEE ALL NIGHT. This am. Like 10 mins ago he Pooped and Peed, I did all the praises and the Kids filled him with love and play.

Is this normal for an 8 week old to hold it that long?

The first night we had him (Fri) he peed 2 times in the bathroom. Sat night only once.

I will also be teaching him to use pads, due to the fact that I work 12 hour shifts.

We take Ozzy to bed with us at 9:30 pm and he holds it on weekends until about 7 am. Weekdays we're up way earlier. But he has no problem holding it all night and then during the day when we're at work (he's in a crate). I don't know if it's normal or not, but I say consider yourself lucky!

We're having some trouble with Holly too. She holds it from bedtime until about 6am but during the day she runs away and pees and poops anywhere she can find. I take her to the pad and she may or may not go but the minute I turn my head she's off going behind a table or something.

Kobi is 7 months old, and he holds his pee from around 9pm until 8-9 am the next morning. It has been a hard job trying to potty train, but he is doing really well now. You have to be patient, and do a lot of praising and give treats. I give him cheerios for his treat, and he loves them. They are not harmful to them like some of the treats you buy. He even lets me know now when he has to go potty. He has a harness and leash, and we are on a rigged schedule. First thng when he gets out of crate in the morning, is go outside. Then back in for treat and praise. Lunch time, same thing. Supper time, same thing. Then around 8-9 pm, we go for a good walk and he does his thing. He will not poop or pee in his bed. Also, when we first started potty training, he wanted to play when we went outside. I would just keep telling him he had to potty and we would get a treat. Now just as soon as he is finished, I do not let him play, I take him inside. He needs to know he is outside to potty and not to play. Good Luck, and I hope this helps !:aimeeyork

There are nights that Ahi only wakes up once...and a couple of nights that she didn't wake up till 6-7am. I think it's normal for him. Depends if he's really tired and how much did he drink before bed. And your puppy is very young so he's doing really good. :)

Sounds like you're putting TOO much effort into it. You shouldn't have to get up every 2 hours. And you shouldn't have to wait for 45 minutes for her to pee.

First, an 8-week old pup's bladder can usually hold it for about 4 hours. Anything longer, and you just got lucky.

A better way to manage it is to have an xpen or playpen set up as a long-term place to stay. That way, you're in charge of where the "accidents" happen. On one side should be the open crate for the dog to sleep. On the other side should be a pee pad or litter box.

Overnight, put the dog in the open crate. If she has to go during the middle of the night, she won't soil her crate if she has an alternative. She'll walk as far away as she can -- to the peepad or litterbox -- and go.

In the daytime, feed and water her and then take her out right away. Dogs usually pee and poop 5 minutes after eating. Wait with her for 5 minutes. If she doesn't go, put her back in the xpen for one hour. Then take her out again and wait 5 minutes. Repeat until she's successful.

The only time you let her out of the playpen during the day, she should be on leash and under 100 percent supervision. You don't want any accidents while she's being housetrained.

Solution - don't turn your head! If you can't keep your eyes ON HER then she must be contained where there are pads covering the floor - crate or expen, etc. Your pup is not trained yet. You first must train it and THEN its reward is free time in the house.

This is how it works in our home. Even if I'm making toast in the morning, if I can't have my eyes right on Oz he goes in his crate until I can watch him. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!!!

ETA: I've learned also that his paws don't touch the floor in the morning until he's gone outside. This helps a great deal also.

Thanks! I was so concerned about him holding it so long! Ill do the four hours.....everything i read said age in months equals hours they can hold it! Thank you thank You ;)
