Socialization Ideas for Rescued Dog? Hello all! I have had my 5 year old yorkie for a little more than a week now. She was a stray, then lived with an older woman who fosters dogs until they can be adopted. Not sure what her history was before that. She has adapted extremely well to my boyfriend and I but barks, lunges and gets into a frenzy (I fear she would try to bite if she weren't on the leash) when she sees dogs and people when we're out on walks. She is so calm and sweet though when it is just one or the both of us so I know given the right training she would not be a threat to people and dogs. We know that she probably didn't have much socialization and want to work on her with that. We are beginning an obedience class with her on Monday, so we know that she will be thrown into that situation, but I was hoping to see if there was something I could work on for the next few days to ease the stressfulness of all of a sudden being in a room with several dogs and people. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks :) |
What a blessing for her that you are giving her a loving home, there are a lot of people with rescues on here than can give you great information. Welcom to YT. |
I hate to keep bringing up Cesar Millan, but he's right in that dogs can sense your mood and pick up on it. You are already "stressed" about this upcoming experience. Perhaps you could work on projecting a calm-assertive energy to your new pup. Confidence, rather than fear of the new situation. I suggest that you even watch a few episodes of the Dog Whisperer. Cesar seems to specialize in fixing these types of dogs. Good luck. I'm sure your new family member wants to make you happy. |
