Next Phase??? My 4 month old Zoey is doing terrific with housetraining. I had at one point been crating her, I will feed her in the crate, leave her in the crate for a few hours, take her outside to potty, let her run around in the backyard for a hour, bring her in, then let her stay out for awhile about an hour (while restricting her access to the full house and taking her out for pee breaks), and then back into the crate for a nap and feeding, repeat..... This system was working for us. Yay us! Now the problem is the crate itself has some issues and I am seriously thinking of switching to a pen for her, but my question is when will I know when she wont need anything? Should I go out and buy the pen (it will be in my bedroom where the crate originally was) or should I try to see if she can go without it? I would hate for her to pee in my bedroom while Im sleeping! P.S. I dont really like her taking up residence under my bed either! I dont know what she can be doing underneath it and I dont have any way to block off access to it..Grrrr... |

I agree with being under the bed. I always say that Gizmo treats it as his personal toilet if he could. But I would try getting the pen and putting the crate and another comfy bed in it and see which she chooses and go from there. So happy she's been good for crate training. Wish Gizmo would have taken to it so well  |
I would really love a pen, but when I went to Petco to look at them, they seemed so big for her and for the small area in my bedroom, so I guess a pen is out for now. Booooo! However, I did purchase a dog gate for my bedroom, does anyone know if I take the crate out of my room and just use the dog gate to block off her ability to go anywhere she pleases, do you think she will still probably use it in my room? What I have noticed is that when she does have an accident in the house, its never in my room (I guess because she sleeps in there?), but in the living room or dining area (which is now blocked off) or recently the kitchen area! However, she never has an accident in my room. Any suggestions? |
I started mine out slowly- I gave them access to a small space for a short period of time and when they were really good about going where they were supposed to I increased the space they had and the time they were alone. Now they have free run of the place when I am home and are left in the bedroom when I am gone. |
