Agressive Behavior We have a male yorkie that is 1 year old and has been aggressive primarily with the kids. Like when he is eating or if they are hold him or playing and he will snap and growl at them sometimes. It doesn't do this with the adults. Any ideas on what we can do? |
I wish I could really help, but I'm fairly new to puppy ownership, so all I can do is ask some common sense questions and give some common sense advice. How old are the kids? Are they getting the dog too excited? Have they accidentally hurt the dog? Are they in its face all the time? I think there just must be some reason that the dog is acting out. I also think that kids need to know that the dog is a living, feeling creature that needs to be respected. They shouldn't be afraid of it, but at the same time, they shouldn't treat it like a toy. |
I would be very concerned about aggression in any dog ... but agree that the children should know that the dog is a living being and has feelings and there are things the dog likes and things the dog doesn't like, just like them. That being said, I would take definite steps to curb the dog. You can tell him "no" firmly and remove him from the family when he gets aggressive. He won't like being alone and teach him that he can only be with the family when he is not aggressive. Put him in another room behind a gate or door ... wouldn't put him in a crate if you want him to like a crate. You will have to be very vigilant and do it every time. They are smart and he will catch on that if he is aggressive, he doesn't get to stay with the family. Also see that the kids are very gentle with him, handle him carefully and never hurt him and never tease him. Don't play tug-o-war or games that encourage aggression. Good luck. Jeanette |
Did you get him as a young pup? I agree...when he shows aggression remove him from the situation and sayNO! When I brought my girls home I would put my hand near the dish then take it away. If they growled I would say NO! My 3yr old grand daughter can sit right next to them while they are eating and take the food right out of their dish and they just look at her...the only one that can't go near their food dish or water is our cat.... |
