Nightmare Walks My Bella is 14 months old. She's a great dog except when it comes to our walks. Both Calvin and Bella get walked a few times during the day and more if she rings the bells and wants to go out. The problem is is that if she sees another dog or person she starts barking and pulling on her leash like a mad woman. Its getting to the point where its really embarrassing. She isn't aggressive at all but when she gets going its really bad. Calvin is normally better (he's the quieter one) but once Bella starts than he starts. I purposely try to walk them where hopefully we won't see another dog or person. I just don't know what to do. Its ruining our walks. |
I'm listening. I have the same issues with Spike. Granted, he's only six months old, but I believe good habits start early. I'm reading Dr. Sophie Yin's book, but so far I haven't had the dedicated time to employ all her methods. It also relies on using strangers which is not that easy. |
Sometimes a basic puppy obedience class might help. Gets them used to being around other poeple and other dogs. Worked wonders with my first Yorkie. |
Thought it was only me. I have same problem with Tootsie. She is 21mo old. We have been to dog parks & she does ok there (except with some dogs) but walking her around complex she acts like its HERS and no other dog allowed. It does get embarrassing, I even try to walk opposite directions to "avoid" any encounters. I have been told that it is her way of "protecting" me & it's just a tertitorial thing but my goodness. And the barking....or should I say yelping lol. One of the maintenance guys calls her killer which is a joke cuz she is the sweetest thing ever.:aimeeyorkr |
It could also be she's really excited to see other dogs and people. While on a leash, they can't happily, and quietly approach another dog they see in the distance. They can try, but get to the end of the lead and no go anywhere. It's almost like they're saying, "hey over here! I wanna say hi but your kinda far!!! Hi hi hi!" What you could do is recruit some friends or neighbors to he'll you train. While walking with her, approach the other dog or person. As soon as you see her attempt to run towards the dog of person, or try to bark, immediately turn around and walk in the other direction. When you have her focused back on you and she is calm, turn around and try again. With repetition, she'll learn that being calm gets her to where she wants to go instead of pulling and barking. |
I like alot of her videos... She has a lot more! :) |
I have no training advice but wanted to tell you I love the name Calvin! :) |

Shelby it's fear, because one she gets up to the person she stops barking, I have done the treat with her with the neighbors also, but the episodes will repeat again! I am at a loss what else to do. Vet suggested herbal calming tabs, but I hesistate doing that. |
I'm going to follow some of the advice and tips in the videos. And can I say that I hate this woman already? :p |
