Rough play with other dogs Hi...I am new here and have a 5 month old Morkie named Lucy. I am having a problem with the way she interacts with other dogs. I have taken her everywhere with me since I've gotten her, so she is well socialized. I take care of my aging father who has a Pekingese named Liz. I go to my dads everyday and take Lucy with me. The problem is, Lucy will not stop jumping, nipping or chasing Liz for hours upon end! It is constant from the time I open the door until I leave. Lucy NEVER stops or takes a break. Poor Liz gets so tired she even tries to get up on the kitchen table to get away. You would think Lucy would get tired, but she doesn't. My dad says he can't believe she is still doing this and that she should have calmed down a LITTLE by 5 months. When we are home, Lucy is a totally different dog. It's only when she sees Liz that she turns into a crazy dog. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to take her with me anymore. I hate to do that though, because I have to spend so much time with my dad. Shouldn't she be calming down some by now? Why does she still do this? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!! |
Nope, at 5 months she is still very much so a puppy. Sounds pretty normal and some like to play more than others. I dogsit a 6 month old puppy who does the same thing to Jackson. Jackson LOVES to play but after a while, he does get tired of the puppy antics. I think it's also in part that she does not live with another dog so going to see one is still "OMG exciting!" Jackson grew up with older dogs in our houses (my moms dog, and my dads) so I think he learned when enough was enough faster. I would give Lucy a few moments to calm down during the day, maybe give her a stuffed Kong (I put plain yogurt and a few treats in it and then freeze it). Jackson always enjoys those. Also, bully sticks and other chews, etc, could keep her busy. If she won't sit and chew those with the other dog out, maybe try an expen or a crate? Somewhere where she has a place to chill and be kept busy but Liz gets a little break! |
ETA: I see Brit's post now. :) At 5 months old, Lucy is still very much a puppy. You have another 1.5 years of development ahead of you. :) Give Liz a safe place to escape Lucy when she wants (something more comfortable than the kitchen table). Supervise when they are together and give corrections. Work on training Lucy on basic commands and practice in front of Liz or with her. Take them on walks together. Get involved and promote structured and calmer activity as much as possible. Don't wait for Lucy to magically calm down with age. The maturation process also requires training. |

My yorkie is named Lucy too and when she was a puppy - my Westie could jump up on his stool to get away from her. This worked until she was able to jump on the stool herself! |
^^ LOL, Max's place was the couch....until Teddy learned to jump up there too. |
Thanks so much for the replies! Separating them for awhile is usually what I try to do...one inside and one outside. The mayhem just continues as soon as they are in the same room again! I have tried correcting Lucy when she won't stop but she is in a constant frenzy...I can't even get her attention ! I pick her up and say "NO STOP!!" and she wiggles and wiggles until she gets away from me to get back to Liz. I will have to take them on a walk together...I can't believe I never thought of that, thanks! Maybe if I wear her out a little, she won't have as much energy for all this crazy playing. I know she is still very much a baby so this is somewhat normal. Her attention span is quite short, but I will try to work with her more both alone and with Liz. I have taught her to sit and lay down on command but that's about it. Sometimes her "sits" are only for a microsecond though :) Maybe a puppy class would help? |
