Perfect dog except for the peeing! Ruger is now "almost" potty trained. I think the big problem is I'm semi retired and like to sleep late. He'll run around the house all day and be fine. I'll take him for a walk and he pees and poops like a good boy, but during the night he'll sneek upstairs and pee and poop on the pads I put out where he started peeing and pooping. Now he pees usually on the pads but often just near them. Sometimes, rarely, he will go to the door and let me know he has to go out. This also concerns me when I take him anywhere. If we go inside a home, office or business I pick him up for fear he will pee on the floor or wall like he does at my girlfriend's house. Any ideas? I'm thinking of going back to square one and start crate training him again, but he's now sleeping either in my bed or his bed. He's one and a half if that makes a difference. FYI, I don't say or do anything when I see what he's done in the house. If I catch him I do startle him and put him outside or on the pads, but I rarely if ever catch him in the act. He's neutered and I do my best to completely clean up his messes. |
What about using a belly band at night? I don't have a male but I have heard of others using these. You might look into them. |

Question? If I did this would he get the idea after awhile, or would I have to use it the rest of his life? My neighbor had one on his dog, but the dog was really old and recently passed away. |
Ummmm, good question. I am so sorry but I am just not knowledgeable about males. Hopefully someone will jump in here and answer that for you! I wish I could help more. |
The belly band may work. If he sleeps in bed do you hear him jump off? I would shut him in your room so he can not go else where in the house. And maybe that way you would here him in the night and could let him out or put the pads in your room for him to use. The belly bands are a great idea when visiting other homes. I have a male I had trouble with and used the belly band when I can not keep an eye on him. He peed in it at first. But now it is almost always dry. I had stopped because he was doing so well. But just got new carpet so I put it on when I am not watching him and at first he was trying to mark my new carpet. I leave it off all night as he sleeps in bed with me. |

Can you just lock him in your bedroom at night? I have a baby gate on my door so that he can't roam the house at night. Even though he has free roam when I am not home, etc, at night I just prefer him to be locked in my room. I also like to sleep in (in college, lol) so I will be sure Jackson gets let out late (like 1am) so I know he will also sleep in late. |

This is exactly what I do. My opinion is once they get up and move around in the middle of the night they are obviously going to have to potty, so I prefer them confined in my room with me. They are ready to get up early so I get up with them, let them eat, go potty then we all go back to bed for a while! :D |
