Growling, growling, growling Hi all, I haven't posted in this forum in a while because quite honestly Teddy is an absolutely wonderful 8 month old pup. No biting, chewing, barking, accidents, I nipped all of it in the bud early on and Teddy is now being used to socialize puppies that come into daycare...I'm so proud of him :) However, he's acting a little funny. We live on the second floor of an apartment building and he is gated in the dining room area so that he has access to the french doors so he can see outside whenever he likes. He started growling a little bit ago whenever he hears/sees anyone through the windows, which I thought was pretty normal. He would also growl/bark once if he hears people/voices coming up the stairs or if they knock on our door too. However, yesterday I had someone deliver some sushi and he went absolutely crazy barking! I'm not sure what to make of this? I guess the difficult balance for me is that I like that he is attentive to noises/voices outside that I wouldn't notice, but I also don't want him to bark excessively (it was close to howling) when I opened the door. How can I address his issue? I'm not sure how to balance this behavior other than completely eradicating it so that he is quiet all the time? I appreciate your time, Rose |
I don't think it is possible to completely eradicate this kind of barking, alarm or notification barking. Like a lot of Yorkies, my boys were late bloomers when it came to barking. I advocate Victoria Stilwell's approach to allowing the dog to notify you with a bark, but the dog should be trained to obey the quiet command. We have not achieved this in our house when it comes to visitors, but we still work on it. Victoria puts a mat by the door and trains dogs to sit quietly on the mat before the owner opens the door. |

Alarm barking is Max's vice and my one challenge in training. I miss the days when he was quiet and we wondered if he knew how to bark. :p Karen (AllDogBoots) has a thread about her training experience in this area. I will find it for you. |
Here is the thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ning-bark.html It is a general barking thread, but she addresses the door/window issue. |

I remember coming across that thread a month ago and said to myself "thank God I don't have this issue!" and closed it...jokes on me  |
Dogs sense things in people that we do not sense, your baby may of sensed something unsettling in the delivery guy. MY dogs hate hats. The only people that can come in my house and wear a hat are the people that live here, even then the chi will bark until the hat is removed. The female pom thinks that she must bark when you come in and when you leave. I figured that she is just saying hello and goodbye because she stops as soon as you say hello and goodbye to her. The poodles dont usually bark when visitors come in unless the chi sets them off. Mina (baby yorkie) doesn't bark unless you or one of the other dogs has something she wants,,,food or chew bone. I have tried to teach the chi to not bark, because he always starts it up. But there are just some things that are hardwired into a dog. He has improved alot over the past year or so. |
Hello! I'm new to YorkieTalk so please forgive me as I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I did come across this post Rose, and my Noah does the exact same thing!!! We live on the second floor of an apartment as well, and Noah used to never bark or yap, one of the things we fell in love with him, but after 7 months or so (He's 9 months now) he started barking and growling at the back door, then voices in the hallway downstairs, and now everytime someone comes through the door. I know exactly which howling noise you are referring to as he does too... at the end of the day, after the initial barks and growls hes done but its every single time and I dont know how to stop it either. Have you had any luck, or is it getting any better? Would love to learn more information if you have any! |
