My new 4 year old Yorkie Hi everyone, I'm sure there have been similar posts about this one but i saw that a lot of them referred to puppies. Lucy (my yorkie) is 4 years old. She is the sweetest thing on the planet. We got her 2 weeks ago. She knows how to pee on the wee pad, but she poops on 3 different spots. On the wee pad and on 2 locations outside the wee pad where she has pooped before. This is hard wood floor and i've cleaned it with the appropriate doggie products several times but she always leaves us a little present on these 2 extra spots. What should i do? I cant watch her all the time, does it makes sense to reprimand her after the fact a few minutes later? Will she know? I praise her every-time she goes on the pad and give her a treat. Should we get a crate and try that? Thanks I appreciate any help. Still learning, Joyce |
She is still pretty new to your home, she will get it sooner than later.... trust me ;) Congratulations on your new baby!! |
It's never a good idea to reprimand for bad potty unless you catch them in the act and even then you want to redirect to the correct location. So I would ignore the bad potty as you are doing and clean it up but out of her sight (or she'll soon think you're the maid). Reward and praise for good potty. She'll get it eventually. |

Perhaps try a different cleaner or two to eliminate the scent in the two spots where she is continuing to potty. If you catch her in the act, I agree with Cathy, redirect her to the correct area, calmly. When you can't watch her, limit her roaming area/freedom to one room with the pad. Always make sure that the pad is easily accessible. If she has to travel across the house or from one floor to another, she might not be inclined to make the trip. |
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the responses! :) We'll keep trying and i'll make sure to praise her more for good potty habits. Also good to know not to clean bad potty habits up in front of her. |
