hello friends.

i have a 4 1/2 month old yorkie named ryan. he is a beautiful boy and i love him sooooo much. the problem is he has some serious behavior issues. he is constantly barking. im crate training him and im trying to do everything right but i just cant get him to stop. he is also extremely hyper. im trying the coins in a jar technique. shaking them when he continuiously barks. it doesnt seem to be working. can anyone relate to me. or possibly help me? is there hope for my baby boy?

he also goes absolutely insane sometimes. running around like a madman. especially when visitors come over. i try to calm him down. im always reinforcing good behavoir. im trying to do everything right.

my girlfriend is loosing her mind. i know he is a puppy. i love him dearly. he is in a great home i can assure all of you dog lovers. i just need some help.

i dont want to have to pay 1000 dollars for a dog whisperer.

please help

Gee, that sounds tough. No advise but I do sympathize.

I'm lucky, my guy is not a barker. I've found that when he's wild it's usually because of me and that we haven't walked or played enough to wear him out.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise! He has boundless puppy energy and needs an appropriate outlet for some of it. Playtime, long walks, all will help.

If the pennies in a can aren't working; try a little squirt gun to quiet incessant barking.

Sounds like a typical yorkie puppy. My Sassy is 8 months old and is wild most of the time, she doesn't listen to anything I tell her. I did start putting her in time out for a few minutes if she is to aggressive towards my other female. Good Luck

Our Norman is the exact same age. He's also very energetic! I am hoping that it is a puppy thing and that he will calm down. I have noticed that he is much more relaxed after he's had a ton of exercise!

Hi. Congrats on your new little yorkie! Is he getting enough play time/exercise time outside of his crate? Young pups have a lot of energy and need interaction. If he is spending a lot of time in his crate, he will have pent up energy - which will make him a wild man when he gets out. He will also bark to try to get his packs attention to come get him.

My 1st yorkie was a hyper girl. The vet's office staff has told me most of the yorkies they see tend to be on the hyper side my little Cricket could be an absolute wild woman! (It did get better w age). Now, the little girl I have now is quieter, not quite as hyper, but she still likes a lot of activity and bugs us to do things with her constantly (we are the entertainment directors to this 2 yr old!).

I wish you luck! Believe it or not these puppy days will go by so fast and you will look back and miss him as a puppy (I know, right now you'd kill for a little maturity!).

Teddie had a few episodes like that. When he got to be too rambunctious and flying around the house and not listening, I would put him in his kennel for a minute. When I took him out I would calmly talk to him and take him outside and we would play tug-o-war with his toys, throw a ball (which he is learning to retrieve). I did the coin thing a few times, that seemed to work okay. I sprayed him with a water bottle a few times recently because one was in hand, but I am working on training him to not bark by saying, "thank you--I hear it--no more bark!" He gets it sometimes, other times he is more adamant. He only tends to bark though when he hears something...especially outside. I wish you luck!!

I agree with the others, this dog needs more exercise. How long do you leave him in the crate? It's probably best at this age to take him out every couple of hours and let him go pee, and then have 15 minutes of play and exercise and then back in crate. I found it easier to to just crate overnight, they can hold it twice as long, so about 4 hours, and during the day, I kept Joey in an x-pen, with pads and toys.

It's really typical yorkie to get all excited when company comes, although I think most breeds do. Tell your company to ignore him, and only give him attention when he calms down.

Sounds normal to me. You need to let him run off that energy before company comes. Lots of play and maybe some puppy classes, Petco or Petsmart both have some reasonably priced training. It will help everyone get along better.

Puppies like to interact alot with their owners (we call them Moms and Dads!) If he is in the crate when you are sitting watching TV or something, he'll want to come out to be with you. They thrive on companionship.

Moments of running like a maniac are called 'the Zoomies' and many small breed dogs do it. One of mine only does it when I put her on the bed but she makes me laugh when she does it.

My lil friend 05-24-2011 11:57 AM

Mina is pretty much the same age. Her schedule is to get up in the morning, potty, play, eat, play, potty, nap,,,repeat. She only barks when she wants one of the other dogs chew bones, which is amazing to me because we also have a pom (barks at the wind) and a chi (barks at the wind and when the other dog barks).

He is a baby,I think that people forget that they are just babys, very much like little kids. They spend the first two years learning the basics and then the rest of their lives learning cooler stuff. When you meet a dog that is very obedient and looks to its owner for instruction,it is because the owner has worked with that dog everyday, just like working with kids. Its because the dog feels as though it belongs to a pack just like a kid belongs to a family. You are creating a relationship that will last a long time, dogs can be the very best of friends.
I try to always speak softly but sternly to my dogs. The best time I have found for training is after I have played with them to run off some of the energy. Mina has a crate but only sees it if I am leaving the house and noone else will be there. It is large enough for her bed, water bowl and peepee paper. Other than that she is in hand or leashed to my belt loop, going everywhere I go. She gets exercise, not lonely and I am not going to forget to take her out if there is a chance of her leaving a puddle next to my foot. As for barking,I try to train (key word try) our dogs to "no bark" If they bark, I use the hand command (American Sign Language sign for "NO") and say "no bark". I think for some breeds it takes longer to learn when to and not to bark. The chi is hardwired to bark,he is 6hrs old and has learned to at least bark only when visitors arrive. He will stop quickly unless the visitor has a hat on,then all bets are off.

tercex11 05-24-2011 12:42 PM

I have a puppy that is only 12 weeks and would start barking at about 2:00 am. someone on this site recommended that I put my shirt in the back of his crate. They said that the smell would calm him and make him feel more secure. The first night it worked and he slept all the way through. Last night he made it till 5:00 am. I can't see if it is going to solve the problem long term, but 2 days later it has helped.

Good luck.
