Aggressive towards puppy Chibi is my 3yr old yorkie who has kind of been an only child ( for the last year and a half hes lived with my families lab) but we moved out and now got a new puppy. Mostly he plays with the puppy and they get along great but every now and again he gets possesive with things. Today he had a toy and was growling at the puppy, I tried to distract the pup but she went after him and the toy and I think he bit her- she yelped but I didnt see any wounds. He has never been like this before, I've always taught him to drop things and trade and hes never been possesive like this.I'm very worried about him and my puppy. What do I do??? |
I think your best bet is to let them work it out themselves unless someone is getting hurt. I used to foster many pups, and have always found that they can usually work out their "place int the pack" without our help. Your 3 yr old may just be teaching the new pup "manners". |
I would get two of all toys. Then, you need to be able to protect the puppy from any harm. The older dog needs to be watched and corrected, until the pup is older and big enough to take up for himself. You will need to teach the older dog to play gently with his new little sister. At the same time you can't let the pup get too wild on the older dog, and I would intervene before anyone gets hurt. Also, lavish attention on the older pup so he does not get jealous. |
If there are going to be spats over toys and the puppy has just recently arrived to your house ~ I would pick up all the 'high value' toys that your older dog loves. He is NOT going to share everything with the new puppy right away. Leave some toys that he doesn't care about down until your new puppy has made a smooth transition - set them up for success. OR take up all the toys until you see that everyone is getting along - at least in that moment, then introduce some of the toys that aren't favorites. Eventually, you will be able to have all toys on the ground - but there may still be 'spats' from time to time. I agree with not interfering unless absolutely necessary (ie )someone is getting hurt or biting. |
