Old Pee in carpet making training impossible? I have having such a hard time getting my 7 month old yorkie trained. Bad part is, i live in an apartment and can't have him ruining the carpet. I have been trying to tain him to use potty pads, when in his x pen he does fine. When i let him out he pees all over, even on my couches. You can even smell the smell of it and i am getting very frustrated. He is my first dog and he is so cute and fun to have around but the peeing has to stop! One other problem is that the carpet is old and a dark brown color so half the time when he pees you don't see it unless you happen to step in it. So it's even harder to clean up if you don't know it's there. Is this prior peeing that i can't seem to clean gonna make ptty training impossible? Any suggestions for a really good way to get rid of odors/marks like this? I tried searching but what i found was not quite what i am asking. so bare with me. Thanks |
Any ideas? |
I would suggest having a company come in and clean your carpets professionally- make sure to pay for the extra de-odorizing service. Then get a blacklight. Every night use the blacklight to see if there is any new stains in the apartment and use a good cleaner like Nature's Miracle to get them up. If the whole place smells like pee it will be very difficult to get him trained. |
Two things - to get the old stains and smell out, you need to use a good product that's made specifically for "pet stains". Nature's Miracle is a popular one, I personaly have found that The Equilizer (available though Amazon and some vet offices) works best. If you aren't seeing him go each time, that's the issue right there. until a puppy is housbroken, whether it's a pee pad or outside or both, you have to watch them like a HAWK. Never let him out of your sight so that if he starts to "go" you can quickly scoop him up and place him on his pee pad. Every single time you see him go on it, praise like crazy! Through a party lol. The ONLY way to teach a dog not to do their business somewhere is to catch them in the act. If they have the chance to pee wherever they want when you're not looking, they'll never learn it's inapropriate because it's never corrected and he doesn't understand there's a certain place he can go. When you can't keep a very close eye on him, he has to stay in his expen, that's the only way. He's using the pad fine in there because dogs instinctively won't potty in their "den". They don't have that same "instinct" with the rest of your house and yes, old smells will make him think it's ok to keep using that spot. Yorkies can take a long time to housebreak and it's not uncommon for a 7 month old to have accidents, shouldn't be constant though, if it is, you need to be more diligent in the training. |
