Taping puppy ears? first off all i hope this is the right place to post, my puppies are eight weeks old and i wanted someones opinion on if it a good time to tape there ears or is it to soon:confused: |
well i just notices it says general TRAINING questions, sorry. hope i still get some tips THANX:D |
I would not suggest taping the ears... it can be painful if you dont do it right. I tried it once and regret hurting my baby boy. After that I prefer to shave them with clippers. Which are not very expensive at all and can be bought pretty much anywhere. And than cut the edge with scissors being carful not to cut the ear. |
I taped my Cairn's ears, but Cairn's have the more wirey coat as opposed to the more hair like texture that Yorkies have. I agree with the above post. Just carefully trim the hair on the ears. Good luck!:p |

Myself...I'd carefully shave the top of the ears and if they aren't up by 10 weeks, I'd tape them. I, personally, expect erect ears on a yorkie. |
I would try the trimming the hair first. I have had great luck with doing that on my pups. Good luck |
thanks everyone im going to shave them i appreciate your tips :) |
I've been told to shave the ears and do daily massages of the ears by a breeder, which have worked for me. |
I have taped my yorkie's ears first time at about 8 weeks. She didn't like it and tried to get it off. She succeed the first time. There is plenty of information on the internet about taping the ears and in the library books as well. You want to do it early on because when the dog is too old, the ears won't stand up anymore. It's always better for the yorkie to have ears up particularly because floppy ears are prone to ear infections as the air can't get in. I have taped her ears on two occasions 8-10wk old and they stood up within days. So it wasn't a lengthy process but it's different for each dog. Both of her parents had floppy ears that's why I knew she had to have them taped. You must shave the ear first...the hair should be fairly short...check this link for more. Harleys ears were not up when I got him...I prefer my yorkies ears up...I shaved the all the hair off the ear...and taped them up...Taping does not hurt them at all...I did 3 days taped up...took the tape off on the 4 day...left the tape off for 1 day if they were standing than I did not retape until they dropped again...than I shaved the hair again and retaped them up for another 3 days...It took about 2 weeks of shaving and retaping for Harleys ears to stand on their own...but now they are up. Some Yorkies ears stand on there own with just shaving the weight of the hair off, but some need help if you want them to stand by taping...A Yorkies ears should be standing IMO for the health of their ears...Yorkies have hair that grows inside the ears...if the ears are floppy water will get in the ear and the hair will trap it and no air to help dry it up and can cause an ear infection...if the ears are standing air can get in and dry them out...regardless, up or floppy ears that hair should be plucked out to help prevent ear infections. |
