Therapy dog training
 
I'm thinking of taking Smokey in for obedience classes to be a therapy dog. He has an incredibly sweet and loving disposition and I think he could really bring some joy into someone else's life. When he was younger he was too high strung, but he's four now and calmed down a lot. My aunt works at an assisted living facility that participates in therapy dog programs, so I could easily bring him there when he's certified. My question is, what qualities does it take in a dog, what kind of training, and how long does it take to be certified?

Generally the dogs needs a basic obedience course - like sit, stay, down and heel stuff. The dog needs to be calm, friendly, not mind being petted, touched, not easily startled, etc. The Red Cross in some areas offers a course. Petsmart in some areas offers a program, too. Most dog training clubs offer a program, too. Delta Society offers a course, too.

Bentley took his CGC test after about 4 sessions of obediance training with a private trainer but most of his learning i did at home, basic sit, stay, socialization to people, other dogs, loud noises, rolling things, ext.

After that we worked on our delta evaluations which you buy a book for about 40.00 and study it all the way through or take a pet partners team training course. we did the home study one and still passed our evaluations. sometimes you can join a local chaptor of pet partners i did the Mo-Kan pet partners club.

Just be prepared for a lot of reading, training, test taking, and donating. it actually costs quite a bit to get evaluations and send in paperwork. but totally worth every penny to make people feel better. good luck PM me with any questions.:p
