How many piddle pads do you have down?
 

I hate starting a potty training thread since there's sooo many, but this is a really specific question that I can't find the answer to.

Alice is doing pretty well with housebreaking (she goes outside when I take her and inbetween uses her pads 99% of the time now:)). At first I had the pad in the kitchen but she wasn't really using it. Moved it to the living room and she's been going great! The other room next to living room is where the computer is and if I'm in there, she will just go on the floor instead of walking into the other room to use the pad, so I put a second pad in there - ok, going great, she uses both.
She follows me all over the house every single time I move LOL which of course I'm fine with, but her pads are downstairs and if she follows me upstairs and I'm, say, folding laundry, she won't go downstairs to use the pad, she just goes on the rug.

Is this normal? She's still only 6 months old and it's not a big deal, but just wondering if you all have your dogs stick to using only 1 pad in one location of the house (that's obviously what I want her to do)and how do you get them to go to it if they want to 100% of the time be where you are? I follow the normal training rules (catch her in the act and move her to the pad or outside, praise like crazy when she uses it or goes outside etc.) but she just refuses to leave my side to use the pad or hold it till we're back in that room (and I'm not talking about long period of time here either:confused:). If I had a pad in every room of the house, she'd never have an accident lol but that's crazy right?

When Joey was under a year, I had pads in almost every room, I didn't want him to have to go far to find a pad. He learned the fastest where we have wood floors and tile, the carpet confused him. He's 4 1/2 now, and he has two pads, one for pooping and one for peeing, he doesn't like to poop and pee on the same pad, he also doesn't like to use a pad while I'm in the room, I don't know what I did wrong, but he doesn't ever want me to see him go. On walks it's different, and he'll pee every chance he gets! I say make it so it's easy for them, and really they'll let you know which rooms they prefer going in. I use to just put a pad, anywhere he'd have an accident. :p She may have a few set backs at this age, teething and spaying seem to set them back a little. My breeder told me to ignore the accidents and praise the mistakes, it does work.

I use the washables I get from RDB911. I don't see anything wrong with having one in everyroom or at least on each level when they are young. You want to set them up for success. I have three out. One is in their xpen that they sleep in, so it really doesn't count for daytime usage. They have two they have access to during the day. One in the living room and one in the dining room. I have four kids using them so sometimes they get changed a couple times during the day. (only the girls use them, the boys go outside).

The one in the night pen doesn't get used that often, it is mainly for the occasional emergency. They usually can hold it all night. Anyway, nothing wrong with multiple pads..better that then letting them make mistakes that could have been avoided...

Ok, thanks:) Ya, I was thinking about getting the washable ones to save money. Is that a hard transition for them? I'd imagine I'll need the spray stuff at first so she understands?
I think if I stick one more in the upstairs hallway, we'll be covered lol.
Have you found that as they get older they don't need them all over the place so much? I'm totally fine with that for now while she's a puppy and maybe even one on each floor when she gets older, just didn't know if I was wrong for doing it and developing a bad habit if I should eventually be able to expect her to use just one. I've only ever had big dogs and never used piddle pads so I don't know the "rules" lol.

I have one in my living room & one in my bedroom by the door. I too would like to go with just one location, but it's not possible right now. I'm remodeling (putting a stacked washer & dryer in an unused coat closet I'm reversing the entry to, on the mainfoor) so I have the construction area gated off (1950's plaster walls...big mess :rolleyes:)

Once my projects are done, I'll gradually slide both the pads, day by day, closer to the hallway area I want them to be. I'm hoping it goes well.

What does this mean? :confused:

I have two down, one in the bathroom and then one in the room they get locked in during the day because then they don't have access to the bathroom. With two I like to have two down anyway because it gives them more room to go. I also have one that will not let anyone see him poop, weird dog!

Charlie does the same thing.... He does well on his pads as long as they are close.. but if I decided to hang out in another part of the house, he wants to come too and of coarse if he has to go, he just stops and goes.... I'm noticing there is one section of the carpet in one of the bedrooms that is his favorite non potty pad area to go... I'm thinking it's partially because he can smell the potty left from before, so I'll be steam cleaning the carpets soon to get the smell out, hoping that will help.

While training I have one in every room. As they get older they can hold it longer you will notice which pad they use most and then you can go with that area. Once mine learn the outside well they usually want to do that more then using their pads. Good luck

I have two pads down in certain locations. My yorkies will travel from one room to the room with the pads. I think having them in the exact location and not scattering them all over the house has worked to train them to differentiate between pee pads and carpets. My dogs do not pee on carpets, they use only their pads.

I put 1 down the day that Andy came home. I still if the weather is bad will put one down just in case.

When Rizzo was still "in training" I had one in every room, now just having one down works for us, but I also live in a small place. Good luck! sounds like Alice is doing great!

I have one downstairs and 2 up in my bedroom. I was actually thinking about eliminating the one downstairs and working on having them go upstairs to go but haven't done that yet.... but mine are all older than yours.
