Not store broken?! How do you train your yorkie not to pee/poo in stores? I am was so embarrased the other day when we went to a dog botique and he peed and pooed in the store!:eek: He is house trained, he is so good at home, he only has accidents when someone forgets to let him out but when we go to the store its like we are going to a dog park, he just thinks he can pee and poo where ever he likes. I don't even want to take him to the store with me any more- any one else have this problem or have advice??? |
Try walking your dog outside to potty before entering the store (a car trip can be exciting and make the dog need to potty). Make sure he knows key words indicating potty, peeing, and pooping. When I'm walking my boys and I don't want them to pee on someone's mailbox post with pretty flowers planted at the base :p, I tell them "no potty on the flowers" and they listen. You could try telling your boy, "no potty in the store" when you enter. If he does, say "uh uh uh." I believe it helps to always praise for going potty in the correct place, including outside (my boys are pad and outdoor trained). Every single good potty, I praise profusely. It is a challenge when dogs smell other dogs, or where other dogs have gone potty. The first time I stayed in a hotel with Max, he smelled where a dog had obviously marked on the wall. He went to lift his leg, but he looked at me first as if to ask, "is this okay?" I gave him a firm "no" and he went right to his piddle pad. Keeping a very close eye on him during our stay, I know he didn't try again. |
A lot of dogs will poo/pee out of hyperexcitement from all of the smells and energy connected with an unusual event, whatever it is. I always make sure Tibbe is empty of both before introducing him to a new situation such as you describe. When we go visit, his first stop after the car trip, is to the lawn or spot of grass where he can toilet, which an excitable dog like he is seems to be usually quite ready to do. In case he is not ready sometimes, I walk him around until he has - or keep our visit inside short and him in my arms. I've noticed that more insecure dogs or dogs unable to be well socialized seem to have the problem more frequently but for many dogs it is just a one-time occurrence due to age, bad timing and/or excitement. |
I just do not let mine down on the floor when we go in places like Petsmart. I actually don't take them often because ours always seems to be full of huge dogs that are not well-trained or behaved. They also often look of questionable hygiene and I always wonder if they are up to date on shots and free of parasites. Maybe I should not worry so much, but I do. So, I just keep them in my arms, in their carrier, and in the buggy. That would also solve any pee/poo accidents in the store; which, btw I have seen other dogs do and then the owner takes a quick swipe with a paper towel and no wet cleaner. That is the kind of thing that makes me worry about parasites and other germs! I admit, I am a bit phobic. But when your dog smells all of that residue/odor on the floor, he probably feels obligated to add his own scent to reclaim the area. |

I, for one, don't let Tibbe down on the floor in pet stores or the vet but realize everyone is not as anal as I am, though glad to find a couple or more others out there! I'm probably too scary but can't help it. |
I don't let Teddie down when we go into the store. Partly because I am afraid of what is down there and what else might be walking in there (big dogs). Partly because he is outgoing and would walk up to a rabid raccoon if I didn't stop him. :p |
I just don't let mine touch the Floor at all... In fact, I lay a Towel down in a Shopping Cart, put both of them in it, AND, tie them in via their leashes/harness'. I just can't stand the idea of them touching the dirty Floor, other "deposits" or another dog's nose or another area for any reason. Seems like it would be easer just to leave them at home, but... AWWWWW I just can't do that, GOTTA take um with me. :rolleyes: |
It is hard because sometimes they do it because they smell other dogs. My chachi does it when I take him to Petsmart. I just try to get him to go before we enter |
Wow. I do let my dogs on the floor but we don't go out to these types of places often. When we go to the groomer my boys both walk in on their leashes and they both have accidents on the floor even after pottying right outside the front door. |
ADBoots, HA, I walk mine into the Groomers by their Leashes too, shows ya how hypocritical I am ! :D But, I figure if they got the money to go to a Groomer, they might just have done the inoculations as well. chachi, YES, I think that is caused by a "scent" response, probably an "advertising" issue. BTW, What a nice pair you have there, that little Jewels is ABSOLUTELY precious. I'm thinking about getting a Teacup at some point, maybe after My Female Becca gets a little older. |

Jackson did this once in Petsmart and I wasn't really embarrassed... I see dogs do it all the time! LoL. With all the smells and everything, they probably think it's just like being outside. Now it WAS embarrassing in this nice little pet boutique we go into (it's all carpeted too) and Nala (my friends lil yorkie) took a big dump... haha. Woops! But why on earth would you put carpet in a pet store where you allow pets to enter? Seems kind of silly to me. We do always make sure they go ahead of time now! We usually get to a pet store (Petsmart, Petco, Pet Valu, etc) once every 2 weeks or so. |

chachi, I SEE !, mind were the same way !!! Such nice tiny little puppies... My Male Sneakers is 2.5 yo/11.5 lbs, and My Female Becca is 9 mo/6.5 lbs and growing still. Maybe it's the access to food 24/7, and the two pounds of Treats each they get every day. (well almost, just another thing I can't help doing :rolleyes:). Those BIG Brown eyes and wagging tales, get me every time ! :D Oddly enough, both of mine Sire and Dame are very "normal" weight. Sneakers and Becca are Brother/Sister a few Liters apart. Somehow they just throw large offspring, though I don't expect Becca to get as big as my Male (I hope). :eek: |

always give a break before going into a store. mine will use them everytime! also the more pet smells are in a store like Petco, Petsmart the more it temps my male to mark and my female to poop on the floor. boutique style doggie stores where they actually CLEAN their floors and don't have tons of dogs peeing on them both my pups do fine and never have accidents in. this is the reason i got kwigy-bo bags though. didn't want them on the floors would rather carry them in comfy carrier bags. |
Interesting thread. Ruger is very good at home, but he does piddle when he gets excited. I try to empty him before going to friend's homes with a walk, and I don't really worry about him at PetSmart. They have a "cleaning station," so it's obvious they are fully prepared for accidents, but I do try to walk him on some grass before we go inside. Usually if we go into a shop or someone's home I just hold him. At 10 lbs he's heavier than he was as a puppy, but he's stilll small enough to pick up and carry around easily. He's never had an accident in my arms. I will say that I try to leave him on the ground as much as possible. All dogs need to be socialized, regardless of size, and as long as the neighbor's huge dog does nothing more than bop him on the head now and then he's fine -- one of the few large dogs he can't dominate. |
I try to take him before, he usually pees outside the store as well. He's picked up a "marking" behavior I think from my families Lab, he pees on everything. Now I can't get him to stop. Luckily it wasnt carpet but it was a crowded dog party event and I was totally embarrased that he was the only one that had an accident. I guess I should just walk him for longer outside the store? I wish I could train him out of marking things, hes neutered and everything but just loves to claim things as his own :rolleyes: |
Hello guys, 2nd post:) I take Moshe to PetSence about once a week. I figured it was a good way to get him some real world experinces and socialization in a semi controlled environment. I do find if we go around 6 or 7 pm there aren't as many large breed dogs there. I suppose I should be more cautious of the floor, but he just loves walking around smelling everything and greeting all the children in the store. I do draw the line at the huge communal watering bowl they have at the front door. YUCK! We haven't had any accidents....yet. He saves his accidents for the living room floor. It seems when we are out (so far anyway) he is on his best behavior ( I say that, tomorrow we will go and he will make me eat my words). |
I kind of quit taking mine too. Lucy HATES the pet store and shakes the whole time we are in there. I cannot figure out why. Ringo loooves it; but he's too 'iffy' around big and strange dogs. Last time, there was a big German Shepherd - unleashed - running around the store. I was waiting in line and quickly picked Ringo up but the dog's owner never stopped the dog from coming right over to us and trying to get to Ringo. By this time, Ringo was going OFF. That did it for me! Back on topic - I would always make sure Ringo had hiked his leg on something right BEFORE we went into the store. I imagine there are quite a few dogs marking their scene inside. |
