Poop Eating - Not his own Our little Yorkie all of a sudden has taken to eating poop from other dogs (possibly cats) when we go for walks. It just started a few weeks ago. At first it was easy to spot, if we saw him paying too much attention to something in the grass, we'd give his leash a yank (he's on a harness) and keep him moving on. Then if he'd pick up a piece before we could give it a yank, we'd tell him no and he'd spit it out. Now he's taken to grabbing the poop and scarfing it down as quick as possible. Once its in his mouth he won't let go. Telling him no won't do it, and trying to pry his mouth open resorts in poop all over his face hair. Any suggestions? The pineapple trick won't work, since its not his poop he's eating. He eats Evo as his daily food (its the only food our other dog will eat that doesn't make her puke) and he's been on it for months, and gets treats of chicken jerky and other dog treats once or twice a day. We also occasionally give them fresh sprouts or lettuce (which he likes to eat). |
What type of food are you feeding him? Cat poop is irresistible to dogs on certain diets and generally indicates that your dog's diet is lacking. |
how old is he? i'm guessing he is still a puppy or still fairly young. mine used to do this also. all i can suggest is only walk him where you know there is not alot of poop. people should pick up there own dogs poop. so find a cleaner area to walk him. :dogwalk: |
He's 3 so he's not that young. There's also a bunch of cats that roam the area, so it may be cat poop, or someone's feeding their dogs something that passes through that he likes I guess. Oh well, guess I'll just have to get used to poop breath. |
You cannot let your dog eat other dog's poop. You don't know what diseases could be carried through these dogs' feces. My dog, on occasion eats his own and my other dog's poop. The vet isn't concerned because both of my dogs are healthy. However, she says it definitely could become an issue should he start eating unknown dog's poop. |
you will have to make sure he is never off leash and able to access other animals poop and if he eats pets in your home try either pineapple in their diet or meat tenderizer over their foods. as for other people's pets you will just have to be in control of where your pet is and what he/she is eating. don't allow it to happen and it won't |
Meat tenderizer?? Never heard of that trick before... I have two and Trooper is eating Deegan's poop, but not really his own (at least I haven't seen him)... So who's food do I put the tenderizer on? And is it safe if Trooper is a liver shunt baby and is to avoid meat protiens?? I've tried the pineapple and it doesn't work for them... |
