Yorkie puppy that acts like a rude teenager when I say "NO." Hello all, I have a 3 month old female puppy who knows what "NO" means but for the last 2 weeks everytime I said "NO" or "Leave It Alone" she drops/or leaves the item to swipe at the me or kick one of her back legs. She also makes a frustrated growl sound (it literally sounds like she says 'ughhh') and runs off. When she swipes at me she doesn't physically touch me, sometimes she just swipes the air but it is towards me or my direction. I never praise her for this behavior. Any advice on how to stop her from doing this? |
She's only three months old and she actually leaves it alone after you tell her, "No"? I'd say this is pretty darn good. It took Joey a lot longer than that, and I had to actively teach, "Drop it." Remember not to use the word, "no" too much, and sometimes it's easier to use sprays such as "Bitter Apple" on things that you don't want them to chew. I also recommend puppy proofing the house, so that they can play with most of the items the find. If she's just stomping her back legs when you say no, I wouldn't be upset, the girl just has that "Yorkie attitude"! You really need to make a video of that, I'll bet it's adorable. Your yorkie will probably never be like other dogs who always want to please their master, yorkies are for those who like a challenge. You could over discipline, but you don't ever want to break her spirit! |

Thanks for the reply everyone --- you guys/gals are quick! Didn't think I would get a response for a couple of days. Yoko (her name) knows "Drop It" as well but I only use drop it when we are playing with her toys (trying to teach her fetch; only 30% of the time she will bring the toy back). I guess I wanted to teach her the difference - like something she should drop - like her toys and something she shouldn't be playing with at all by saying no. As suggested I will try to puppy proof the house. I got her as a surprise V-Day gift so I'm still puppy proofing the whole house. Her living area is puppy proof except for the satellite cords (which I can't move and they run throughout the whole house). I know Yorkies have a little attitude, but not like this. I'm guess I'm still in shock because prior to this she was a scared puppy that use to always want to stay close to me and now she is a hyper yorkie with an attitude. I love her regardless. *** At the moment I only have a cam on my laptop and phone. Both very sucky quality to capture her esp. the "Ughhhh" sound she makes lol. |
I have three beautiful coated silky hair Yorkies...all have attitudes (nothing bad but just seem to think they're hot stuff). I have one cotton coat who has the nicest disposition one could ask for. So I've been watching other people's Yorkies and those with cotton coats (or less than "standard) all seem to be so stinking sweet and the "diva's" are, well Diva's. Maybe that's something in their genes...anyone else notice that? |

Tibbe is all attitude and a true toot in that he manages to comment on much of what I say to him with head jerking back, snorting and foot stamping but he obeys his commands. That is one of the things that I love about a Yorkie is its absolute need to run the world - so I let Tibbe think he's in charge and he lets me think I'm in charge. |
