"Umbilical Cord Training" Help... My Oliver (6yr old mill rescue) is having a very difficult time potty training. The worst part is... he constantly does it behind my back while I'm at home! Oliver has been at home with me for almost 2 months and he gets the chance to go outside all the time... sometimes he does.. other times he goes as soon as he gets inside. He was in a crate for 6 years so I can't crate the poor guy. And again... mostly... its when "mommy is IN the home!" I have heard about attaching him to the leash with me while we are in the house to prevent these "accidents"... so where I go.. he goes etc. Any suggestions?? |
When he goes outside & does his business, do you tell him Good Boy go potty WHILE he is going & give him a treat when he's finished & take him out often. I find that is what has always worked for me. |
I'm not crazy about the whole 'tethering' thing - but that's just me. You do need to limit his free space when you can't watch him constantly. What about an xpen as opposed to a crate? Take him outside every couple of hours and stay there with him. When he finally goes - PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE - with some excellent, yummy treats (his very favorite) that he does not normally get. Both of these things should happen the MINUTE he finishes his business. In two weeks, I'll bet he will be trained. |
