Chewing everything :mad: My 7 month old puppy is chewing up the walls, the kitchen table and chairs, the step stool and anything else made out of wood she can get her mouth on!! She was spayed last month and had a few of the biggest puppy teeth the vet had ever seen pulled out. I naively thought that she would stop the chewing once all her puppy teeth were out. Will she ever grow out of the chewing?? I want to repair/replace things but hesitate to do so until I know that she is done. She has lots of different toys and enjoys chewing them for a little while until she decides the wall will taste better. I've tried Bitter Apple but it doesn't really stop her for long. Any advice would be appreciated! |
You have a tenacious chewer! I would try increasing her exercise to wear her out so that she is less interested in chewing. When you catch her in the act, correct her and redirect her to a positive behavior. Does she also have edible chews like bully sticks, himalayan chews, or anything else? I have to supervise my boys very closely with these types of things, so they aren't babysitters necessarily, but they do provide plenty of chewing. If all else fails, I would maybe discuss with my vet possible blood tests to see if something is missing from my pup's diet. I've read that just like rock eating, sometimes wood chewing can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency. Sometimes it is just a compulsion fueled by boredom and pent up energy. Good luck. |
My girls were never interested in chew toys....and I never found a chew deterrent spray that worked with them so I offered them bullie sticks..that helped save my wood a little bit.:rolleyes: There is also Himalayan chews...I would make sure they played a LOT...then let them chew for a little while..each day. |
If you dont want him chewing on your furniture youve got to give him something that is okay to chew on like a bully stick |
Yes - I give her bully sticks - she really likes the braided ones. But she still sometimes chooses the walls and baseboards over the bully - even with me in the room. I think I'll try the Himalayan chews too. She is not allowed free roam of the house yet as we're still working on potty training and she has a large xpen when she has to be home alone. I've had Mini Schnauzers before and I don't remember them ever chewing like this baby does. Are you all saying that this may not be a phase and she could be chewing forever??? :confused: Thanks! |
It is all part of puppyhood. My Chachi stopped the destructive chewing at 1 1/2. |

Kayla was a chewer too. If it helps any she finally got out it. She also chewed the walls. Now, Dudley is another story. He will be 2 tomorrow and he still chews on the baseboards. In fact, just this morning I had to get on to him about chewing on it. The only advice I would know is to just try to attract their attention to something else, like a chew toy. We also have schnauzers and I know what you mean. They would mind and never had a chewing problem. These little buggers are a different story, but you have to love them. lol!!!! |
