how can i give my yorkie more freedom? hello! i have 16 month old yorkie named Cosmo that has been crate trained since i've had him. i find myself not allowing myself to do much after work because i feel so guilty that he's in his crate all day long! i don't know how to slowly trust him and give him some more roam. i left him alone for a half hour once and i came home and he tore up the carpet! he pulled it from the ground and was in shreds! |

thank you! he has a kong in his crate and multiple chew toys. i attempted gated him into the kitchen once before and he was completely stressed the entire day. i set up my lap top to record him and he was standing in front of the gate barking and crying the entire 9 hours i was gone! it was so awful! |

I can relate! I don't crate, but my puppy is in a large playpen while I'm at work. So, when I'm not at work, I take her everywhere with me. I invested in a purse carrier and she hops in & goes wherever I go. My son was home on spring break last week & looked at me like I was a crazy person when I put my pup in her purse to take her shopping with us. By his third day home, he was putting her in the purse so she could go to the movies with us :D Could you try taking your pup places with you? It gets them used to the car too & makes them great lil travelers. |
I found settling into a routine helps. They get a walk every morning, same time every day. There's designated time in the evening when we either walk or play. They do have to have an outlet for their energy beyond chew toys. It may not be ONE thing that works for you, but a combination of all of them. Once my gang learned when play time is, I found they mellowed out at other times. Also, when returning to the house after being away, don't go crazy at first. Make it seem like it's no big deal that you come and go. Good luck. |
i wish i could bring cosmo to more places, but unfortunately he gets terrible motion sickness. every time we are in the car he throws up. if we are in the car for 10 min or an hour, he gets sick almost every time unless there is someone with me to hold him . he never liked car rides from the beginning. i tried to slowly get him used to being in a car but nothing ever helped. |
What can we do? Yorkies love being with their humans. My little man use to stress out when I started working again. My parents would tell me he protested in every way possible. So I started playing fetch games with him befoe work, I would hide his toys in he blankets (took longer to make my bed but it was funny to watch him dig), and hide his kibble in cups all ove he room which would stimulate his mind. He would be too tired and now naps all day. As soon as I get home, we start all over with the fetch games. |
thank you. hopefully cosmo will soon get into some type of routine. i've spent thousands of dollars and countless hours to try and train him the best way possible. the trainer said he has separation anxiety that some puppies may experience. |
