New here and questions about nipping We have a 4month old morkie puppy and she is a very sweet and smart little girl but our problem is her nipping our hands and fingers everytime we want to pet her and lunging at our faces. She doesn't do either aggressively but we can't figure out how to curb this behavior. We do keep chew toys with us at all times so when she wants to chew the fingers we give her the toy but not sure it is working. But I have to say that the lunging like a cat at our noses is working the nerves. She hasnt nipped me yet, but has gotten my DH and DD's nose a few times luckily with no blood drawn. Usually when she does it I sternly say no and put her on the floor but of course will jump back on our laps. Any advise would be greatly appreciated |
when princess was constantly nibbling as a pup i called the vet for advice. they said to firmly tell her "no!" and put her down, completely ignoring her. it really didn't take that long for her to figure out that if she did want attention she can't act like that. but they're just like a baby, too, in that they like to discover everything with their mouths...that part did go away almost completely when she got close to turning a year old. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. I agree with Princess, give your pup a firm "no" (not angrily or excitedly) and get up and walk away. Play time and attention end when your pup displays unwanted behavior. You can also start by saying "ouch" or some people recommend mimicking a dog's yelp. If she continues, then withdraw attention until she is settled. Here is a good article: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...nhibition.html My older boy jumps and gives me love bites on the nose, but he has learned to do it very gently and not in a way that startles me. |
