How can I train him if he isn't motivated by food? My picky eater is making it impossible for me to train him. I'm new to all of this but since he is so finicky, I have nothing to reward him with. He truly is a "terror" right now and it seems all of my time goes to trying to keep him from biting me, my shoes, my daughter, etc.... It would be different if he liked some type of food. I'm putting in the time but getting no results. I'm not complaining about my little guy I just want to train him so we will both be happy. I love him soooooooo much! |
Sounds like you might have a toy motivated Yorkie, and that's a good thing when it comes to training. Instead of rewarding with treats, either toss a toy or play tug-of-war with a fleece rope toy. If that works, you won't have to worry about weight gain or having to curb back the rewards later on. If that doesn't work, try a better treat. Liver treats are a dog favorite. I even cut up tiny pieces of turkey dogs when I really want a reward that will drive them crazy. As for chewing everything, try substituting an acceptable chew toy for an unacceptable one. If he picks up a shoe, give him a no and replace it with a bully stick or nylabone. Good luck! |
We have to use toys to train my female. Finnigan is treat motivated. Gwenndilyn definitely food/praise motivated. Just use his favorite toy as his reward. |
I tried all kinds of treats with Tallulah, too. She definitely isn't praise motivated... that's a pretty big challenge in itself. Finally found two things that work with her -- although she turns her nose up at dry kibble in her bowl, she love to get it one piece at a time by hand. I give her the Natural Balance duck and potato formula. When that gets old, I switch to poached chicken. I shred it into tiny bits - and I do mean TINY. If the piece is big enough to have to be chewed, she will stop and chew on it for a long time, and we lose the momentum of our training time. |
Sounds like my German shepherd. He had (has) really no interest in food and even less interest in treats. But he will do anything for a ball. Find a toy or toys that they love and use that! |
I'll try to use his toys again. He does love to play fetch but when I try to train him he only ignores and tries to get the ball or toy. I'm starting to wonder if he is smarter than I am. What an idiot I look like trying to give him treats and toys while he ignores me! LOL. |
