Puppy food I have a new Yorkie puppy. What's the best food to feed her? Also, she's been using the bathroom where she sleeps...just started this week. Any suggestions? |
What did the breeder have her on and recommend? If a puppy is on a premium puppy food, I think they should stick with it if they are doing well. If they are on a so-so "grocery store-quality" food, then I would look for a replacement. Here is a good site to read reviews on most all of the quality dog foods: Dog Food Reviews - Dry Dog Foods - Powered by ReviewPost Just pick a food that has 4 stars or more and you should be fine. I like All Life Stage foods as I have dogs of different ages and this way I don't have to worry if they eat each other's food. I also like to stick with 28-32% protein as this gives them plenty for active lives & growth and not so much as to slowly cause problems with their pancreas. I also pick a food that I can find locally if possible. Shipping can add quite a bit to the price. If you do need to have food shipped to you, petfooddirect.com has been a good company for me. Last but NOT least, it needs to be a food that your dog will eat. I don't think any dog will actually starve himself if he is only given one food he does not like, but it is nice to have them enjoy their food and not eat it as a last resort. Some pet stores will stock sample sizes of quality foods. You can pick 3 that you would be happy with and then let your dog pick the one he likes best by showing you how well he eats it. There are so many premium foods, you could get literaly dozens of answers that would all be good. Solid Gold Wee Bits, Merricks Before Grain, Orijen, Acana, Artemis, are all examples.....but check with the Review list, copy off some brands, take it to your local pet stores and see what you come up with. You might check other places for dog food too -- I get my pups' food at the loal hardware store. They stock several premium brands and have opened a whole new world to dog food in our area! |
