Need a little help I have recently added a new addition to our family, an 18 month old handsome yorkie...Gumbo. His mommy had alzheimers and had to go to a nursing home. He now has a brother...a 6 year old doxie and they have already become best buddies. I am having real trouble potty training him. Because his previous owner NEVER took him outside, he doesn't want to go potty outside. He will pee outside some but not much. I just can't kennel a dog. I treat them both like children and wouldn't ever put a child in a cage. He has adjusted to everything else here....feeding schedule...sleeping arrangements (in the bed with me) and treats. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
Bentley is 9, almost 10 months and he also has an older brother who is a 7 year old doxie. Haha! We had the same problem with potty training. We put him on a strict feeding schedule, had him neutered, and went for walks more often. Also when he did go outside we made a huge event out of it. Very excited and lots of praise. It took a few weeks but he finally started to get it. It seems like you are already doing all of this so my only advice is to just stay consistent. If you catch him going in the house clap loudly and say no and take him out. When cleaning it up make sure you use something like Nature's Miracle bc it gets rid of the enzymes. Otherwise even though you may not smell it, your pup still will and will think its okay to go there. |

You are wonderful to give Gumbo a loving home and I am happy for you that he is getting along very well with your dachshund. Was Gumbo pad trained, or allowed to potty anywhere in his previous home? You don't need to kennel him, but it would be helpful to limit his freedom in your home to either an xpen or one room where you can monitor him closely until his potty habits improve. Take him outside frequently, and after meals and playtime. As Lucyana suggested, walks are great. Keep him outside until he potties. Every time he potties outside, praise him profusely and happily and give him a little treat. He should get the hang of it fairly quickly and then you can taper off the number of times you need to take him out. As you know though, smaller dogs mean smaller bladders. Definitely clean the accident sites in your house to eliminate the scent so that Gumbo isn't tempted to return to those spots. Good luck and best wishes. |
Thanks Maximo...Gumbo was very rarely taken outside. The lady that had him was an alzheimers patient. Her daughter took him out every afternoon when she came by to check on them, but other than that I believe that he had free reign of the apartment. By the looks of the furniture that I saw there, he just went potty wherever he wanted. We are trying very hard to get him trained without having to limit him too much. We just don't like treating him any different than our other baby. |
new baby Congrats. on your new baby and glad everything else is falling into place. I'm sure some will disagree with me but sometimes you can't treat them the same, at least until he is potty trained. I would work with pee pads and going outside. If he can't make it outside for some reason, you have the pee pad back up. I can't remember if you said he was neutered or not, but if not, that would help alot. It takes time and lots of positive praise to get there but you will. Good luck and congrats again. |
