Is he house broke or am I just well trained?? Hi all!!! Mojo is 5 months & doing very well with house breaking. The problem is I think I'm the one who is trained. He never "asks" to go out....it's alway me asking him. How do I get him to  "ask"? I've heard some people use a bell tied on a string to the door. Has anyone tried this? |
no matter what your doing, your doing great. as long as his going, your doing just right... |
My dogs never ask to go out either we just take them out peridically and they go. |
You're doing a great job! We trained our dogs to scratch the door. TInkerbell is way too good at scratching the door to go out (it's almost constant actually) but she just started doing this about a month or two ago. She's about 10 months now. So I think he will let you know with a little more time. |
Joey (just turned 5 months) rings a bell to go outside and has for about a month. It works great! You just have to be prepared to let them go out when they want to go out whether it's to potty or not. Oh, and by the way, congratulations on your success! |
I remember saying " when will he give me a sign?" well it took awhile Im betting maybe when he was 7-9 months,, and his sign was... he goes up in front of me and sits and stares at me... thats it.. If Im watching tv he'll go up and sit beside it and stare at me.. saying " Its time" took me awhile to pick up on it..then one day it hit me... Oh, thats the sign! |

How did you train them to use the bell? I think this would be great, cuz our front door isn't visable from the kitchen. (...and perhaps my teenage sons would get up from the computer if a bell rang.....lol...not :p ) |
Look for all the signs. I just the LOOK. She will just stare me down. ;) |
Thanks for the web site Yorkieusa. I ordered one. I also looked up their training info. Hope it works. :) |

Too funny! But at least he is going out. I always tell people that my dogs has trained me very well. :D |
This is something similar, I posted this a few days ago on another thread: I have heard of the bell method. Also take a look at this. Not sure if it works but looks interesting, it's a chime for them to step on. I have an Abbie, too! http://www.smarthome.com/6152.html |

Sure sounds like you've got the problem well on the way to being mastered, especially at 5 months! The only signal I get from my dogs is they sit at my feet and stare at me when they want out. Then I 'ask' them "Do you want to go outside?" and they respond with a 'speak" reply. Bark!! If they don't bark then I ask the next question, "Do you want food?", and if that gets the response then we go from there. So I guess I'm pretty well trained too, but they do tell me what they want with bark responses to my questions. They even tell me the water dish is empty that way! So the key in my training is 'outside?', 'food?', 'water?' and a bark to tell me. With lots of repetition it works... I have such talented puppies.....gotta love the smart little babies. Try it and tell me if it works for you. Trish |
Does anyone here use potty pads as the only method of their doggies going outside? I don't take Pippin out much because we live upstairs and it is hard for me to get up and down. Also we both work full time. Our cat has his litter box and Pippin uses the pads. Is this a bad thing? |
Concerning using the potty pads pretty well full time -- if it works for your situation and you're pleased with it, how could it be bad? |
I am training my Biscuit to ring a bell too.Our trainer says to make sureto make him ring the bell with his paw every time you gor out to potty. Also, make sure not to carry your baby out, let him walk and always go to the same spot.We are currently waiting for a sign too.He just goes with no warning so far.Good luck! |
