My puppy thinks click means sit and treat only. I just started clicker training my 3 month old yorkie. Already she is outsmarting me. I am amazed how smart yorkies are. I want to use the clicker right, to always make sure she gets positive praise. She knows sit and down. I might be rushing, but whenever I try to praise her on a behaviour I like for example:; Playing with toys instead of biting, potty in the right area, being still. The minute I click and reward for good behaviour, she gets up all excited, starts to sit pretty, thinking plenty more is coming So she follows me around, looks at me with pretty eyes, sits down and waits for her treat. When nothing happens she then gets mad and starts nipping at my feet I still do nothing since that was not what I was rewarding. These days all she does is run up to me and sits pretty and expects a treat (it is very cute, but I dont think in the long haul this would be good to reward) Did I start off wrong? Or is it because she is still a puppy? Any advice on starting off clicker training I appreciate. |
Clicker training takes persistence. And they do learn fast that a click means a treat, LOL. I can get mine to come from anywhere in the house just with a quick click. It sounds like you may be over using the clicker right now. At this point, because she is so young, I would only click when you are specifically asking her to do something, like sit, go potty, etc. You can also start spacing out the time between the click and the treat so that she knows she needs to wait. Soon, the clicker will come to symbolize that a treat is coming, eventually, so I need to keep being good. |
Thank you, very appreciated. I will try to be more reserved with the click for now, I also think I am very excited myself with clicker training, so I have to watch myself as well and not get too carried away. |
I would start over with the clicker and only use it during training "sessions" for a while. Start with just clicking and treating, so she knows click = treat and nothing else, for a couple sessions, then move to a shaping exercise. You might try shake or wave. You want her to understand that the clicker always gets a treat and that her job is to offer a behaviour to get the click. Once she knows how to do something, intermittently click, but always praise. I also think the clicker tends to work best when you can mark something multiple times within a few minutes, rather than once every now and then. Such as for potty training, I think praise and treats are probably better than the clicker as you cann only mark the behaviour once at a time. |
