2 9 week old puppies fighting...help?
 
So we just brought home our two new puppies. A little girl and a bigger boy. They play great together, sleep together, and follow each other around nonstop.

When they aren't doing the above, they are fighting. Usually it's the little girl torturing the boy but then he responds. They are constantly chasing each other around and biting each other. I've heard its common, but we are worried one will get hurt as they are biting around the face and legs. It doesn't seem like they are necessarily closing their mouths tightly but nonetheless, they are bitting with teeth.

any thoughts on how to stop this, or it is ok?? is there nothing we can do?

We have tried separating them, we have held their mouths with our hands to tell them no....but they aren't getting it.

Hi!

If no one is getting hurt, they are probably just playing. My two play really rough, people who don't know them think they are hurting each other but they aren't. As long as no one gets hurt, I let them play how they want- if it gets too rough, I will tell them to stop.

when i have litters i usually have 2 that do that..they never hurt each other..they are just playing

My two play the same. Sometimes I think they get too rough and I stop them. It is really funny watching them running around and chasing each other and wrestling.

You also need to remember that they are very young- at this age they should still be with their mother and she would be teaching them when it is too much. So if they do start to get too aggressive, you need to step in and redirect them.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America recommends that a puppy be kept with the mother for a minimum of 12 weeks; one of the things mama teaches them is inhibition of the biting reflex. Puppies play and bite each other, you just don't want them to do it too hard.

Thanks we will keep an eye on them.

Many of the ytca breeders were willing to part at 8-10 weeks as well...as were many of of the pm's we received here.

My two are brother and sister and they still play rough at 16 mos old. I agree you should probably step in like the mama dog would do.

Would list the names of those breeders? This is a huge red flag. I know breeders do it, but it is NOT in the best interest of the dog.

I also interviewed a breeder I found on the YTCA website and was shocked when she offered to let us take a puppy at 9 1/2 weeks. I thought they had to agree to a certain set of "rules" to be a recommended breeder and that they are held to the highest standards, but I don't know how the YTCA monitors their activities.

You are correct, they do agree to a certain set of rules, and this is a clear violation of what they agreed to do. This would tell me that they are not a good breeder, and I would wonder what other shortcuts they were taking in their breeding program? I would post their name on Yorkietalk, there are lots of YTCA members who read Yorkietalk. A person must be willing to give their real name as well.

We have already decided not to get a puppy from her and are continuing our search for a breeder. What do you mean by, "A person must be willing to give their real name as well"?

I mean if you are going to list the name of the breeder on a public forum you should be willing to list your real name. Please don't take that the wrong way, but there are breeders who are jealous of other breeders and just want to bad mouth someone, but a person who's willing to list their own name has more credibility. By the way, you can also contact YTCA this way:

Again, you need to give them your name and a way to contact you. This should be done through a letter, not through any type of email. I'm glad you chose to go with another breeder, and I believe that pet buyers should only support the best breeders possible.

I feel bad for ratting her out because, although she is a little quirky, I did like Pam Brown - here in Austin. I found her on the YTCA website. I won't buy one of her puppies now simply because she told me I could take her at 9 1/2 weeks (puppies are due in Feb). There were also a couple other random, odd comments she made and we left her house feeling unsettled. I will listen to my head, heart and gut picking my next breeder as I got suckered by my last breeder and now I am the proud owner of a woolly coated "teapot." I love him and he is fabulous and healthy and I hate to complain because I know I could be a lot worse off. I love this sight for how passionate everybody is and how much great advice is out there. I have had several back and forth PMs with both Mary and Donna and if they are willing to spend their time sharing their treasure trove of knowledge I, for one, am willing to listen and am utterly grateful for all their help.
