New 11 week old Yorkie ignoring me... Hello all, first time posting on ytalk. So me and my gf bought an 11 week old male yorkie about 2 weeks ago and all was well at first. The dog was really attached to me and my gf. However, as of late, my yorkie completely ignores me now. Sure he plays with me when he's in the mood, or so. But when my gf leaves for work, he just ignores me. He plays with his toys by himself, he doesn't come when i call, he doesnt get excited when i come in the room, etc. He does all those things with my gf, so it isnt like he doesnt know what "come here" means. I dont know that I've associated "come here" with any kind of punishment in the beginning. I might have, just dont recall. Just right now I got home from the grocery store and he got up from his nap to see who came through the door, when i called him and said "hey" he went the other way. Im getting really frustrated at this point. I know that hes still a pup and all, but its really frustrating knowing that he prefers one of us only. I have been the one to scold him when he chews on carpet or furniture or when he tried to eat his own poop at first, I dont know if thats why he doesnt care for me right now. Maybe he thinks im just bitter. But at this point, I feel like telling my gf to keep him at her apt because he just doesnt listen at all when shes not around. What can I do to change his behavior towards me??? Ive tried little treats but he doesnt come when I dont have any treats. Hes too smart. Ive tried being SUPER EXCITED when he does come to me, or when he does listen, but its still doesnt help. I cant spend any other bonding time with him at this point (i.e. taking him for a walk) because he's too young and because hes had a mild case of the kennel cough, so he's on antibiotics. It really just sucks because he had a run with diarrhea and vomiting a couple of days ago, and I was worried sick about him because of that and the fact that he wouldnt eat after I took him to the vet. I care for him alot. But now I find myself fighting the thought to just let him be, which totally isnt right. I dont know. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks |
Should have gotten a female. :D Have you ever heard how girls are daddy's girls and boys are mamma's boys? Well that generally holds true with the little dogs too. I wouldn't make much out of his actions since he's just a baby. Just don't do anything, and let him come to you in his own good time, then don't go overboard when he does. Just a quiet good boy and a pet is all. Eventually he will be more apt to be with you more. ;) |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations on your new pup. :) Your pup could be responding to voice tone and energy. Do you sound happy when you greet him, or do you give him the kind of "hey" that you give a friend? Try walking in and saying, "Hey buddy! How are you puppy doggy?" and if he allows you to approach him, give him a little tickle on his chest. In other words, make sure you sound happy, exude positive energy, and give him affection. When you give a correction ("scold" for inappropriate behavior), do it in a firm and even tone. Yelling may scare the heck out of him and turn him off to you. You can bond with him in your home by teaching him how to play fetch, or working on obedience and trick training. I taught my boys to understand, "do you want to do tricks?" and they run to their spots and get ready to do tricks for treats. You are correct -- these guys are very smart. Don't ever show them any frustration or impatience. :D Hope some of this might help. |
That's how my boy was to his Daddy for a while. He would be stuck to me and yelp when I left the room or house and when Daddy tried to comfort him he'd just go to his crate and lay. When we got the female yorkie she was stuck to me but quickly warmed up to Daddy. Now our girl, Chlole, is complete Daddy's girl when he's home (works outta town) and Mama's girl when Daddy's gone. Our boy, Mason, is pretty much both but he sleeps under Mama's arm; Chloe sleeps under Daddy's arm; and our Rott sleeps at the foot of the bed or at the foot of the bed on the floor. Sometimes he'll take the couch lol. Good luck with the new puppy! They are such a blessing and Joy!! |
i read somewhere that boys attach themselves to only one person in the family while the girls have no royalty to one member :P mickey ignores me all the time. actually he goes out of his way to avoid me. dogs tend to like its food giver. how about feed him for awhile? |
My Kody follows commands and discipline better with my husand than with me. Sometimes he will do as I say but once my husband comes and tell him something - usually he only has to say it once. He will come to both of us when called unless he has a "puppytude" for some reason. Kody is 11.5 weeks old. My husband is more stern and scolds him more - but Kody still is right under his foot each step of the way. |
Congratulations on you new little one. Maybe you are trying too hard. Try greeting him when you come home give him a small treat and sit down. He may get curious an come over. He is also young and just learning his way around. Try not raising your voice when scolding him and reward him for good behavior. I have 4 and all have different personalities. Niki my male doesn't leave my side, Cali my oldest female bonded to my daughter. Even though I am home all the time with them. Cali will not let me hold her or lay on me, but will lay on my dtr for hours. |
I also think it depends on the personality of each dog. My room mate and I are both single and there are no men living in our home. We have 3 females and 2 males. My 2 bassets both females are totally bonded with my room mate because she spoils them more than I do. When I scold them they run to her and hide behind her. My Shorkie is also a female and she is also bonded to my room mate. My yorkie and my shih tzu are both males and are totally bonded to me. I don't try to figure out their logic. |
Have you tried holding the puppy on your lap or in your arms petting him and talking to him? Just having some one on one time togther being affectionate towards him. I hope you find a way to bond with each other. Good luck!! |
I think most dogs have a tendency to bond to one individual quite often. So I wouldn't worry about the dog bonding more to your girlfriend, see it for how cute and kinda funny it is. Just keep on giving him lots of affection and he'll gradually act more affection back. Walk around/holding him, take him outside - walk around the yard with him - show him the big world, give him treats...he'll figure out soon enough you're the good guy. All of ours love the family, but if I've been gone and come home - then it's all about me to them. They won't give anyone else a "kiss" if I'm home. It's kinda funny, as hubby and son will try to get them to kiss them while I'm home and they absolutely refuse and sometimes run over and kiss me - but if I'm gone they'll love them to pieces. It's gotten to be a little game with hubby and son now. They see the humor of it all. Then the cats, prefer my husband and son. (get a cat??!!! lol) One of our cats will sit on my lap but if she hears my hubby coming, she'll hurry up and jump off and act like she wasn't 'betraying' him - won't sit on my lap at all if he's in the room. |
