Pee Pad Training Older Dog This is a little bit different question, Sprocket is house trained, mostly :rolleyes: and will go potty outside, when he came to us he did not know anything about the pee pads and I have not really used them as I really do want him to "go" outside, weather is not really an issue for us. BUT there is the traveling, we go places and stay in hotels or fly places and a "rest stop" isn't always available and I hate going down stairs at 4AM past the guards (ya room # again!) for a potty break. Using the pee pads in the bathroom would be of great help, but how do I get him to use them? :confused: All I get is the "look" who me mommy? "What's this for? Or worse starts barking! As he doesn't know what I want. I know this is more of a puppy issue but I'd like for him to do both, is that possible? Thanks :animal-pa |
I have 2 that are pad trained and will never potty outside, then I have one that only goes outside (or on the bath rug) and won't use the pads. Then I have Nikki the male I took in last February and he was only trained outside. He was 16 years old but took to the potty pads immediately. He also goes outside. I think the reason he took to the pads is due to the girls using them. I found it is hard to get them to do both but it can be done. Maybe put the pad outside for him to pee on then bring it inside. |
~~~~~~Bump~~~~~~~~ I have the same issue. Ian is housebroken and I am trying to get him to use potty pads, as well. He insists on going outside to potty and poop. But, with this crazy weather here, he is hesitant to go out in the cold, snow and sleet. Using a pad would really be helpful. Hopefully you'll get some more responses. |
I'm not sure this will help your situation but this is how Cissy is potty trained. When I first brought her home, I built a wooden box that would hold real grass squares. (I would change out the live grass, only .99 per square - very affordable)During the day it was constant trips outside (I perfer her to go outside). We used the indoor box for middle of the night potty trips. My thought was that she always goes on "grass". She quickly had the hang of it and I thought we had a miracle. Later I changed to a pad w/tray and put fake grass on top. Still works wonders! She only uses the indoor box if I am running errands and she needs "to go". She will also get out of bed at night to use the indoor box, otherwise it's outside. Maybe you could try starting with the real grass and see if he will associate it with going outside on the grass. Good Luck - it worked like a charm for us. |
