Going potty in the rain We have had Claire, an 18 month old Yorkie girl, for about five months. She came to us from a breeder's home where pee pads all over the house were the primary toileting method. She has done very well transitioning to going potty outside-we worked very hard on this and we are very proud of her!! :) HOWEVER, she does NOT like to go out in the rain and will revert to going in the house. She will follow our direction to go out even though she doesn't want to, squat briefly (as a fakeout-haha!) and then come in and go in the house!! Anyone have any ideas? I am getting really nervous about the snow-we live in upstate NY and soon it will be wetter and colder outside! Thanks for any help anyone can give us with our pretty little honey Claire Bear!! |
I don't have an answer but I Have the same problem here in upstate new york. Now it's snowing and Dolly refuses to poop outside. She does the fake out thing too and then poops as soon as we get inside. Any suggestions? She was doing great before the snow! |
All i can say is one of mine does the same! He HATES going out in the rain. But he has to get used to it. We just keep him out there until he goes. If he comes inside and goes to the bathroom we make sure to scold him and then toss him back outside in the rain. After doing that a couple times i think he figured out that he pretty much has no choice. |
Will she still use a pad? A cross trained dog is the best of both worlds. |
Eh, I just make him, lol. It sucks for both me and him (I don't like standing in the rain either) but if it's pouring, I just put him in a heavy coat and then he's better. If it's just light drizzling, he's okay. I just put him on a leash and make him go real fast. |
Luckily it doesnt snow here but Chibi won't go out in the rain unless he has on his rain jacket on, maybe she just needs more protection against the wet. I used to have mine pee pad trained with a pee pad in a litter box, it was great because the liter box was easier to clean and descrete so that might be an option too. |
I take him out until he does go, he hates the rain as well but I'm pretty patient. He also uses his potty patch inside if he does try to hold out, or if he doesn't want me to know he needs to potty :p Just make sure you check the spot they "pee" at, just to be sure they emptied those little bladders, haha, sometimes they do a quick squirt and run to the door. :rolleyes: Quote:

Mine are stubborn to go out in the rain as well, however if I go with them and bring the umbrella...it seems to go better. As far as snow goes..I just shovel a little area out and they are fine with that. |
Try a little rain coat for them. Scooter hates the rain and he is house boken but I was having the same problem so I got him a jacket and it has worked. |

I take mine into the garage when it rains. I also put the garage door up so it seems more like being outside. I tried to put down pee pads in there but they just go on the cement. I do have a little fake grass patch I put down in there too. My boy goes on it but my girl doesn't. I dread rainy days. They haven't experienced the snow yet. that should be interesting!!! |
our little guy is 7 months now and does go outside but I have I pee pad in the laundry room he will use when the weather is bad. It is 10 degrees here today and I don't feel like going out either so as long as he uses the pad we are ok with it. Even with a coat on the other day Winston didn't like the wind blowing like it was and I didn't either. You just have to see what works for you. |

Apple won't go on pads, so when it's pouring, I go out w/her under a big umbrella, and squat down w/the umbrella, over both of us, and say "go pee pee"...She doesn't want to get out from under the umbrella, so she goes! I do have one, cross trained (pad and outside) and it's wonderful...Buzz, for some reason, will hold it, 'till the rain lets up, or, he'll eventually go, in the rain...I do walk him out to a tree, 'cause he hikes...Get a really big umbrella, and give that a whirl... |
My babies used to be the same way. The best advice I can offer is to be consistent, it really does pay off. It may take a while for your little one to realize that she has to use it no matter the weather conditions, and it probably won't be any fun for you either -- but, if you stick with it she will learn. When it rains they are so funny because they know they have to use it, so they are really quick at it when it rains. When it snows, I just shovel a clear area for them to use it in. Mine still don't love to potty in the rain or snow, but they know they have to. Consistency is the key -- and lots of patience! ;) |
