When to give her more freedom? Have you always crated your dogs at night and when you are not home? Or if not, at what age did you allow them more freedom when alone? Poppy is doing well with potty training outside and hasnt had an accident in the house for a few weeks now. I know this is still too soon and Im not thinking of giving her this freedom right away, Im just wondering at what age? She is 6.5 months old now and has never pottied in her crate. We dont really have a small room in the house which she could be locked in while home alone, all the rooms are pretty large so it would be easy for her to hide her 'presents'. Any suggestions? or do you think its okay to always have her crated when home alone and at night? |
I think it just depends on the dog really. Jackson began sleeping in my bed at 15 weeks old and never had an accident. From 9 weeks-15 weeks old, he was also on my bed but in a crate ON my actual bed, lol. I didn't really use a crate a whole lot simply because in those first few weeks of having him, I was home alot. So anyways, we moved to using an ex-pen when he was probably, like, 4 months old. So I would put him in the ex-pen whenever someone was not home. Then, around 5 months old, he was allowed free roam to my whole bedroom when I was gone (I had a gate in my doorway). By 5 1/2 months old, he had free roam of the house minus the upstairs. But he's just always been pretty trustworthy when we aren't home (believe me, he's had his fair share of accidents when we ARE home, lol) but he just sleeps while we're gone so it's never been a problem. My best suggestion is you've just gotta try it. I remember the first time I let Jackson have free roam, it was my dads idea. He felt bad because his dogs were loose and he didn't want Jackson to have to stay in the crate. So, I was like what the heck. Let's try it. Left him loose, we went to dinner and I was worrying the whole time... got back home and everything was in perfect condition. I looked through every nook and cranny in the house and nothing was out of place. It was all wood floor downstairs, no carpet, so I wasn't worried about an accident anyways, but no accidents! So, from that day on, I let him have free roam. |
I never crated Kacee. I just kept expanding her space with baby gates. When I knew she wouldn't have any accidents, she got full run of the house. It isn't age you need to look at. It's when she no longer has accidents.:) |
I don't give Natalie and Charlie free roam of all the house. They are in a pretty good size room where they can play, eat etc. I gave Charlie free roam when I had carpet and it didn't work out. Now he is on wood flooring and it is great. I think Natalie would be fine with free roam of the house, but I don't want to let one have free roam and not the other one. They sleep most of the time when we are gone anyways. I am like Brit is it up to the furbaby whether to let them roam free or not. |
I didn't give Mason free roam until this past summer. Now, he's never crated/gated while I'm gone or at night. He's 2 yrs old now. LOL. He still has an occasional accident because he doesn't let me know when he has to go. |
We use xpens to expand their area, we never did crate training....just laundry room and then laundry and kitchen and then expanded to the breakfast nook area. We still don't allow them full run when we leave (carpeted areas) occassionally we still find a dribble under the dining table when we are home and they "sneak" to it. |
