Am I doing something wrong? I have been trying to potty pad train Harlow, and its not going so well. She will use the potty [ads maybe ten percent of the time, the rest of the time she uses it right in front of the baby gate that we have set up to keep her in the kitchen. When she does go potty on the pads I give her lots of praise and give her a treat, but she doesn't seem to be making a connection. What should i do? |
How old is she and how long have you been trying to pad train her? What are you using to clean up messes? |
She's about thirteen weeks old. And I use a enzyme removing spray that I bought. It's called natures miracle. I've been trying to pad train her since I brought her home. |

Can't offer any advice. My Yorkie thinks he can do his business anywhere. I should have stock in Nature's Miracle. This morning at 5:20 a.m. he peed on my comforter! Not pleasant. If he wasn't so dare cute, he'd be in big trouble. He's 7 months old and I've had him since he was 4 month old. Three months and he just not getting it...very frustrating. Never had this trouble with my other dogs. |

Perhaps it is just because she has too much space. To get her trained, I would think that you need to be trying to place her on the pad and tell her to potty. |
you really should keep a log of how oftentje time she goes and that way you will figure out her pattern for pottying. i helps me tremendously. |
I agree with the above post - a schedule is great. If you search - you will find lots of posts on here with schedules. Also - I really don't think that you can actually train a puppy until it is at least 4 months old. Keep doing what you're doing and you will see one day she will get it. I started with mine when I got her at 11 weeks old with a very small area and slowly, slowly started to expand that area. It took her till she was 8 months old to finally get it. But..... I can honestly say that she is one hundred percent housebroken to go into the laundry room area and use the pee pads - no accidents at all. Don't give up - one day you will see that she will get it. Lots of praise, treats and cleaning up with an enzyme cleaner the accidents. Oh yeah..........I found that my little guy (I have 2) won't go on a dirty pad - so I had to constantly keep cleaning them. I would add a clean one over the peed on one so that he can still smell the area. Good luck. |
tried to edit my post, but it won't let me....so i'm finishing it again....logging the times she goes and then looking over it at a later time will let you see what her pattern is. i'm doing strict outside training, but i do have pads out just in case i can't get to her in time. she does not use pads anywhere in the house, but she will use them when in her ex pen or gated in the laundry room. i don't get it, either. by the way, she's 14 wks. it's just gonna take time. |

13 weeks! :eek: Those are some high expectations. My 6 month old boy is still working on potty training. A work in progress... |

Never tell a Yorkie 'No' when potty training. They are too smart and won't get that you mean 'No, not here'. They will think that 'No' means don't potty anywhere! So catch her pottying on the pad, and praise her and give a treat.... Ignore all accidents. Watch her so you can learn her signals too. That'll speed up the training some. Good LucK! |

I absolutely agree with all of this! My fifteen year old IG, who has always gone outside to do her business, started using a spot in my kitchen to urinate. And she sneaks out there to do it! She gets a diruretic 3X a day, so I, plus with her age, I just can't get onto her about it. I've been putting potty pads down in that spot and Opal uses them all the time. No training needed! |

I think I will do that. I will put a pad down next to the kitchen door by the gate where she usually goes anyway, and maybe she'll go there and use the pad. That would sure make clean up easier lol I just wonder if I'll always have to leave the pad there or will i be able to move it once she gets the hang of using the pads? |
