The Grid System - For Potty Training (as promised a while ago) 1 Attachment(s) Well I've mentioned to many my preference of the grid system for potty training, and keep promising to take pictures, well I finally got my homemade system perfected. So here is an explanation and picture of my system. Ok So the grid consists of a shoe tray and rubber mats that are gridded (they're for entry ways where muddy boats drip down etc). The clamps are just because my little bug, I mean sweetheart, has learned how to move the grids and chew the papers... So essentially, pup pees or poos on the tray, poo stays on top, pee filters down to papers. The first few times we used it, we put puppy pads there so that he'd get the sent, and bingo. If he had an accident I'd just dab a bit of pee on the grid to remind him of the scent, and now he just knows. Clean up is simple, throw the papers away daily, or every other day, depending on the amount of use, and put fresh papers, as for the poo I recommend cleaning it up as soon as its discovered, so your little baby doesn't decide to eat it... or drag it around. once a week in the summer, or every 2 weeks in the winter, I bleach the whole system in hot water, a bit of bleach and mr.clean. soak for a bit, rinse twice and let completely dry. I've also noticed that Harley doesn't like to always poo on the tray. For a while I couldn't figure it out, then I realized that maybe he just doesn't want to poo and pee in the same place. We're making a new tray for another part of the apartment and then he'll have two places to choose from. I love this system because we didn't even have to teach Harley to go on it. we confined him in an area so that he had his crate, his food and and tray. he just started going on it. We rewarded and only had a few little training mishaps along the way. He now goes outside when we go for walks, but it is rare that he has an off tray pee accident inside, and like I mentioned we're perfecting the poo, but it's overall working well. This is a great option for people in apartments, or who are just plain busy and leave their dogs at home while at work. It cost me about $30 to make (and only because i had to buy 10 tiles of rubber mats and you only use 2-4, but now I have replacement mats) and if you don't have a creative trouble making dog, you don't need the clamps. If you don't want to bother making it, the UGODog and WizDog are products you can buy in the US, they aren't cheap (around $50USD I think, and if you are in Canada it can cost over $100CDN to ship one (I priced them a while ago). Happy Potty Training! -Kendra & Harley. |
Just and update, I just made a second grid for Harley (which is in the other room), he's been more consistent... not as many poo problems this week with him missing the tray. Pees are all hitting the tray. :) |
gd idea, where did u get the gridded rubber mat? |
You can buy them at Home Depot and in Canada any of the Hardware stores have them, if you go in the flooring section they are in a box of 10 tiles, they are designed for entry ways for people to put their shoes on in the winter, usually at stores. Just choose the grid carefully, cause you want one that's soft on their feet, and you don't want the holes to be too big. If I think of it I'll check the box I have for the brand. |
Update, I've put the two separate trays side by side in his room (he uses one to pee and one to poo), and also added a little 2inch wall he has to jump over on the short side (the rest is now corned in, so that he poos and has to hop over the wall. he rarely misses a poo on the tray too now. |
This is pretty neat! Thanks for sharing. |
It's a great system, with the green movements and such going on now and the economy, I don't really understand why people spend so much on puppy pads, yes this does have a small element of cleaning, and if you used reuseable pee pads then yeah it would take more work, but my neighbour just give me all his newspapers instead of throwing them out, so I don't even have to pay for those. |
Great Invention. Get a patten and someone to make them. |

I'm actually meeting with an investor/advisor person tomorrow to decide whether it's worth pursuing. I'm an entrepreneur so kind of struck me as a good business idea... lol Canada has a Dragon's Den, so ya never know give me a year or so and you may see me there, ACTUALLY. lol So if anyone has tried this system, wants to, has one of the "competitor" products I'd love to hear what you have to say. |
I think your idea is the best! Good luck! Ziva was using newspaper in the garage at night and the pee would roll off before it could soak in. I tried a setup like you described in one of your original posts but I could not get Ziva to step up onto the grid, she was so used to the feel of newspaper under her feet she couldn't "let go" on the grid. I removed the grid and left the papers on the tray. Problem solved! I change the papers when she uses it and bleach the tray once a week. The grid would be better, but Ziva doesn't get her feet wet. |

I'm trying to figure out where the rubber mats go - down in the bottom of the tray, below the newspaper? |
Nope they go above.... so poo sits on the grid and then pee filters down into the paper. you can just pick up the poo with a piece of toilet paper and flush away... |
